Authentic Regional Cuisine. The Abruzzo region of Italy on the southern Adriatic coast is renowned for hearty peasant style dishes with Moorish and Greek influences. Our meal last night was spectacular, start to finish. We opened with a couple of cocktails at the friendly bar along with a plate of incredibly tender calamari fritti, as good as any that you’d get in Rome. Once we took our table, we got a couple more appetizers – the shrimps in herb butter along with the fried mozzarella, served in Italian style as flat triangles rather than sticks. I was delighted with the house red wine, a private label Montepulciano D’Abruzzo that was priced gently at $28 and versatile enough to go with any dish. If you are dining with a group and love to share food, I strongly recommend the Cappello del Contadino, three different pasta dishes baked under a rustic bread ‘hat’ and served tableside for a dramatic presentation. Service throughout the meal was warm but not intrusive. My only complaint was the prices were so low that we had a hard time spending our entire gift certificate even with three hungry people.

Excellent!. Filippo Ristorante in the North End of Boston is exactly what the Italian food experience should be about! The atmosphere is wonderful, comfortable and attractive. As soon as you arrive you feel comforted by the tasteful surroundings. Our server Lulu was unbelievable. She instantly makes you feel at home, treating you as though you were a quest in her home. The food was perfect. If you have a love for Italian cooking, and perhaps even do a little bit of cooking yourself, you will appreciate the wonderful flavors that born in this kitchen. To start we thoroughly enjoyed the pesto oil and bread that was placed on the table. Next our Caprese salad was wonderful. The mozzarella was fresh, but it was the sliced eggplant that was placed on top that made this dish so different and wonderful. Our entrees were just as terrific, if not better than the salad. My girlfriend had what I believe was the Veal Francaise; best Ive ever had. It was tender veal, breaded and cooked in a wonder mushroom and fresh lemon sauce. I had a veal dish that is worth getting again and again. Veal breaded and fried until crispy, layered with pepperoni, fresh eggplant, then smothered with melted mozzarella and a delicious marinara sauce. Yum! We will certainly be back, and want to applaud the chef, and Lulu for a wonderful experience in the North end.
