I went into this Italian style counter after having a nice dinner at a nearby restaurant. Ive been to the North End on various occasions and usually stop at Mikes Pastry for dessert. I figured I would try Gigi Gelateria since it served cannolis, gelato, and espresso, and it had an interesting display of cannoli shells on the wall. With such an amazing display, it had to be good, right? Unfortunately, I ordered a $4 cannoli with ricotta filling and was sorely disappointed. The crispy shell was actually ok, but the sweet cheese filling fell so short of my expectations. It tasted nothing like genuine ricotta filling, lacked chocolate nibs, and seemed artificial and more like a light pudding as opposed to traditional cannoli filling. There were hints of effort – for example the cannoli was overstuffed and also sprinkled with powdered sugar. Nonetheless that did not make up for the spiritless filling. I would strongly suggest potential patrons bypass this shop until they get things sorted out.
I’ve never really had gelato before but I could tell that this place didn’t really have that unique gelato taste. I ordered a cup of vanilla and chocolate and I’m sorry to say but there was nothing special. In fact, I’ve had better ice cream at tinier and less popular ice cream parlors in Boston. I’d have to say that I wasn’t too thrilled with this one.
Every time I’ve been to Italy, I constantly have a cup of gelato in my hand. I’m very committed to trying as many flavors and variations as possible throughout the country and get pretty irritated when certain pesky museums won’t let me enter with one. Needless to say, I’m very familiar with and fond of the dessert, and I use a shop’s pistachio flavor as a test of it’s quality. How does the North End’s fare compare?Unfortunately, Gelateria’s version doesn’t even come close to the milky treat of the motherland. Straightaway I could sense that this gelato wasn’t authentic, as the pistachio was green instead of white. I sampled it, and the flavor tasted shallow and a bit artificial. Each small cup allows two flavors, so I blindly chose coconut and tiramisu.Where’s the luscious, creamy texture? The rich, decadent flavors? I think that these two choices were the best I could have gotten under the circumstances, and they both tasted fine and blended well together. The tiramisu had nice notes of coffee and liqueur, and the coconut had tiny flakes of the real thing. However, all the ones I sampled were far too icy and diluted. One of the best characteristics of gelato is it’s creamy consistency, and that was desperately lacking here. They also inconveniently informed us that the shop is cash only after serving us, so I had to wait inside as my friend ran over to the ATM, hoping they didn’t melt before he returned. As far as North End desserts go, I’d recommend sticking to the pastries down the street.
Live right by the place and have always gone there for gelato but never again. The girl who worked there was very rude. I asked to try a flavor I never saw before and didn’t care for it so wanted to try something different before I chose the 2 scoops I wanted and she refused in broken English. I had to ask a few times because I couldn’t understand what she was saying and because I was stunned since the girl in front of me tried 4 different flavors so I ended up getting a flavor that I couldn’t try before purchasing the expensive ice cream and I didn’t like it at all.
Icy gelato :(. Gelato is supposed to be creamy and smooth, not icy. Also, I expect ANY sort of icecream product to be completely frozen, not half melted. Someone forgot to give Gigi the memo. becauseilikechocolate.com
Pretty good gelato. It was some pretty good tiramisu gelato. They have just a few seats outside and it was nice to just sit and relax after walking around all day. Not too memorable good or bad, but hit my craving for gelato at the time. I like that they have a different selection of about 30 flavors and they had a bigger selection then most gelato places nearby.
(review dated 5/08):i’m trying hard to NOT compare–by look or by taste–any gelato i came across here to the ones i’ve had in italy, but that doesn’t mean their gelati should look half-melted! you know melted ice-cream is actually bacteria-filled and unedible…. it was quite unappetizing to see theirs looking as if the fridge got unplugged half an hour ago. i know gelato is not supposed to be all frozen up, but looking as if melted? what’s up with that? i was so anticipating before i arrived, and got discouraged by the look of the gelati. had a taste of the chestnut flavor anyway; it wasn’t strong enough to taste like anything. i couldn’t pick anything out of their rather huge selection; friend eventually got the baci one which is really rich and chocolatey. i ended up finishing her cup since she was watching the calorie count. yet, wasn’t enough for me to crave for more, unless they improve their presentation dramatically! 🙂
