One of the first things I like to find when going into an Italian neighborhooad is a good cannoli. In the North End, this is either Mike’s or Modern. We chose Modern over Mike’s and I don’t regret it. The line was shorter and this is the best cannoli I can recall having. Make sure you bring cash as it is cash only.
Ah, the great cannoli battle between Mike’s, Modern, and Maria’s. They all begin with M and are all located within short walking distance of each other.Modern Pastry: A solid place for a good, old fashion cannoli. Maria’s ricotta filling beats this place by a hair, but I would say Modern’s cannoli shell is top dog. Mike’s Pastry: It’s BIG, MEAN, and SWEET. Go here if you want variety. They certainly like to play around with different cannoli fillings and flavors.Maria’s Pastry: This place is for the purists who want a good cannoli with plain ricotta. The filling is flavorful without being overtly sweet and has a nice consistency. It was voted best cannoli by Boston Magazine in 2012.
Just as good as, if not better than, Mike’s! Modern Pastry is smaller, but it isn’t as commercialized. Beautiful, great tasting desserts! Love it! 🙂
Wandering in the North End and had a craving for some cannolis. Modern Pastry is a large bakery that sells everything from classic Italian pastries and cookies such as lobster tails and cannolis to American classics like whoopie pies and black and white cookies. There’s plenty of seating inside. Mini cannoli is $2 each – crispy shell with good flavour. The ricotta filling is piped in at the time you order it. Filling is smooth and balanced. Also tried the mini Boston Cream pie $3.50 – I had to, I am in Boston! It’s a decent sponge cake filled with whipped cream, not custard. The downside was I was taking this to go. She crammed the cake into a box that would squish the top chocolate layer (luckily I took a pic before closed it). When I opened the box, the entire top layer stuck to the box and was removed from the cake itself. What a downer that was! Overall the cake was fine but definitely missing the chocolate. Cash only!
Heaven!. Family of four visiting from Utah. We each ordered something different and shared. Everything was delicious! My favorite was the cannoli. I loved it, and now I get the reason you wait to fill it…crispy goodness! The lobster tail was amazing as well…even if we couldn’t finish it because IT WAS SO BIG! The cream puff was perfect too. Mmmmmm!!!We were there on a Tuesday morning before noon. No wait and very friendly service. Glad we chose to try Modern!
Buyer Beware. Yesterday I went to Modern, my 1st choice for pastries in Boston. I am a somewhat regular customer. I ordered 1 Lobster Tail. The young woman helping me was courteous. As I was waiting, I saw a chocolate biscotti w/ almonds. I asked for one to be added to my order. As the girl chose a piece of biscotti, she asked the woman at the register how much.. this was done in an oddly secret manner. they both chuckled a bit, then realized I saw them. The biscotti wasn’t weighed….. When she come over to add the biscotti to the box, she said the total was $9.50. The Lobster Tail was $4.50 ,so this meant the ONE piece of biscotti was $5.00, $.50 more than the other purchased item. If you’ve ever had a Lobster Tail , they are delicious, large and well worth the price of $4.50. The biscotti price was arbitrarily chosen by the woman at the register, i politely said thanks , but no thanks. I live here in Boston, frequent the North End and will not tolerate this kind of rip-off. Great pastries, bad way to do business.
After visiting several bakeries in The North End the best cannolis and hot chocolate are here. I even buy them to bring some back to Florida. After dinner in the North End I always end up at modern pastry for my dessert, guest what that is.
