I visited Somerville for a conference at Tufts University. I was looking for a place to get a quick bite to eat on Sunday night after my flight arrived. Some pre-trip Internet research showed that this place would be open when I expected to arrive. It was just what I needed after a long day of flying. I don’t care for falafel, so I got the small bowl with chicken tenders. I was in food heaven when I looked at the spread of items in the toppings bar. I tried a little bit of almost everything. My favorites were the roasted eggplant, the green garlicky stuff, the pickled cauliflower, and the pickled turnips. I wish I had not put the cucumber salad at the bottom of my bowl because it made the bottom of the chicken tenders soggy by the time I ate my way to the bottom of the bowl. Here’s hoping that this chain continues to prosper and spread across the United States.
Oh my falafel balls. These crispy, savory spheres sure hit the spot. And are luckily light on the wallet as well.Their business model is pretty ingenious (and easy for them to execute, considering they only need a few ingredients in stock) – pick a pita or a bowl, get some balls, and load it up with whatever toppings you want from the bar (pickled things, babaganoush, tahini, hummus, etc). If you’re not familiar with what each tastes like, it could be a bit hard to choose. And since I’m pretty horrible with decisions, I tend to just try a little of everything. The bowls get weighed froyo-style (and you know you’re going to go overboard), so I recommend going for a pita (small was filling for me) since that has a fixed price and no limits except for how much you can pile on.The falafel’s mighty tasty – just the right amount of crunch and not too dry. I didn’t love all the picked stuff I tried, but the hummus and most of the other toppings tasted good and blended well together. The space is casual, and the food comes out fast (especially since you prepare most of it yourself). The seating inside is a bit cramped, so it may be more comfortable to eat elsewhere.Cheap, tasty, fast, not absolutely horrible for you. This is the kind of place I could see myself frequenting every week if I were still in college. Now that I’m a young profesh and (like to think I am) more mature, I guess every month will do.
Great falafel, great price!. You definitely get a good bang for your buck here. I got the small falafel (3 balls) and loaded it up with tons of toppings. I love the wide variety of toppings, and will be headed back there soon to try more delicious combinations. I would just get a side of imported pickles if I could…
