Holy wamamalama you have to roll me home after I eat here. Honestly the best comfort food in Somerville. I never knew a BLT could be so good considering it is made of three ingredients but they took it to a whole new level. My only complaint is that there is always a wait, even when they are closed people are lined up outside. Butttt I’ll allow it because it’s worth the wait. Well done highland kitchen, well done.

The only thing I miss about Somerville is Highland Kitchen. The burgers are delicious and the restaurant has a cool, laid-back vibe. You can carry out if you don’t want to wait for a table; otherwise, have a few drinks while you wait (it might be a long wait – people really love this place). The monthly spelling bee is also tons of fun, but get there early if you want to compete. krismlars.com

The menu is not correct. Choices are very limited and more expensive than advertised. Atmosphere is amiable. Drink menu is larger than the actual menu. If you’re looking for a cocktail with a friend this is a great place.

Exceptional Food, unconventional dining. Upon arriving, with the rolling stones blaring about the dimly lit cramped restaurant, me and my girlfriend had to put our name on a list for a two top; Tuesday night and the place was hoppin. Not what you expect from a restaurant with such commendable food reviews. I was ready for candles and corny decor, not a 1970’s jukebox and Mick Jager crooning in my ear. Needless to say as I stood sipping a seasonal Harpoon (delicious, crisp, clean lines) among a sea of hungry people, I had my doubts about the place. When two seats opened up at the bar, my and girlfriend and I jumped for them. The room was dark, with music blaring from the speakers, but there was still a homey feel (Could have been the old school jukebox at the center of the bar, or the old school diner style menus). Everyone seemed relaxed and engaged in conversation, and as anxious as us to eat.We decided to eat at the bar instead of wait. The bartenders were excellent, engaging us in conversation about the food, definitely knowledgeable of the menu. Food came out quick and hot.The 8 Well-fleet oysters we ordered were delicious, expertly paired with diced shallots swimming in oil and cocktail sauce. Turnip soup is something I have enjoyed many times since moving to New England, but the Turnip Bisque stood out, hitting bitter and sweet notes without the sweet overpowering the natural flavors of the Turnip. A delicious and well matched seasonal soup. The signature dish on this menu is the spicy coconut goat stew, with fried plantains and jasmine rice. Being a lover of all of these flavors and really enjoying curry, I went for it. The flavors all worked well together. The curry was so spicy I couldn’t stop reaching for my water, but wolfing down the tender goat meat wasn’t going to stop. The plantains were sublime, floating above the stew like sweet delicious palate cleansers as the curry swam deliciously on my tongue.Bolognese is supposed to be salty, but my girlfriends PAPPARDELLE BOLOGNESE was definitely over seasoned. It had great, bold flavor, but the meat was salty enough, no need for more. The six dollar chocolate pudding was anything but a six dollar pudding. Topped with rich whipped cream adorned with savory peanut brittle, the pudding blew us away..Despite the salty meat sauce, we will definitely be returning. From the beer selection, to the funky decor, backed by the bold flavors this restaurant rocks.

Great atmosphere and music, but all of our dishes failed to wow. The exception was he fried plantains which were super yummy. Skip the black bean burger. Overall the food only reach ~80% of our expectations.

More vegetarian entrees please.. Highland Kitchen is great overall and it’s in my neighborhood but the options for vegetarians are diappointing which keeps my friends and I from eating there more frequently.
