Another mediocre Chinese restaurant. Zoe’s has all the earmarks of a superior Chinese restaurant, including an interesting menu, handsome decor and friendly, professional staff. However, I have found little to love about the food. A few dishes have been superior – including excellent tender, flavorful eggplant. However, most dishes reflect a kitchen taking shortcuts and producing nearly flavorless food with vegetables past their prime. You know that soapy taste that onions get when they are really old? How about the sickly sweetness of chicken on its way out? I don’t blame Zoe’s too much, it seems when China got rich, the good cooks left Boston for good. What’s left is the dregs – a mere memory of what well prepared American-style Chinese food used to taste. I don’t expect Shanghai quality, but I would like food that tastes of complex and fresh ingredients prepared with care.
