Never Again. Stated succinctly, on the evening of Saturday, 3/I5/14 our four person dining party was not only immensely disappointed, but aggravated by our experience at Stellina in Watertown and we will not return there. We selected Stellina based on many positive online reviews and secured a 6:30pm reservation for our party of four. Two of the party arrived slightly early and were seated immediately. Unfortunately the seating was at a small cocktail table in the bar area. With the serving of only drinks and appetizers it became abundantly clear the seating was grossly inadequate for a foursome. Why we were placed at that table is unclear since there were empty tables in other sections of the restaurant. In retrospect we should have inquired about a change, but being unfamiliar with the restaurant we didnt. We did inquire with the hostess as we were leaving later whether it was a particularly busy evening and the response was no.The seating was not the sole nor worst source of our aggravation however. The worst distinction goes to our waitress, named Laurie. It may have been because of orders by the restaurant management that she clearly sought to rush us through our meal and on our way. We felt pushed to be finished in less than an hour. And throughout there were numerous botches in service: Two cocktails took an extraordinarily long time to be served though the bartenders (which we could observe 10ft. away) did not seem overly taxed with drink orders while they chatted with patrons at the bar; Bread was not delivered to the table until well after the cocktails and appetizers; Laurie disrespected the ladies in our party by not taking their entre order before taking that of the men in the party; Entrees were brought before we had half finished with the appetizer; Plates were served and cleared by reaching across in front of another diner; Plates were cleared before all in the party had finished eating; And Laurie hovered repeatedly, looking for payment, after delivering the check even though we were still enjoying our after-dinner coffee and dessert. With regard to the food, it was fairly good… but not nearly good enough to justify the prices. And portioning was uneven. While two of our entrees were sized as would be expected, two others were noticeably less.Had I dug deeper into the reviews before our visit, as I did do afterwards, we might not have gone to Stellina. Those reviews that commented on the tired dcor and over-pricing were spot on.

The pits. Surly, lazy service, nasty way past the Boston brusque norm. Dining room dirty, loud, crowded and dark. Food is pricy and mediocre. Would never go there again. Hard to imagine how it developed a reputation. Even harder to understand why anyone would come a second time. Unless you like the NYC subway at rush hour, stay away.

Stellina – going downhill.. Stellina’s was formerly a reliable above-average Italian place, with a sophisticated take on Southern Italian Cuisine. But it has lately slipped a notch a or two. We started with pedestrian bread and a caesar salad that was a bit gummy and salty. Plates are generous but the food lacks a light touch and tends to be oversalted. Bouillabaisse had plenty of seafood, but the broth was salty and overwhelmed the natural taste of the seafood. The steak was decent, as was the Chicken Marsala, but the bread pudding tasted stale. Service was tired and desultory – not up to the professional standards the prices should justify. Value was not very good.
