I have now been to Paesano’s twice within a few months, and both times have been much less than impressive. The pasta is overcooked, the meat is covered in pools of oil or isn’t cooked long enough to be tender (i.e. beef tips covered in gristle and still very tough), the bruschetta bread is generally cold and soaked in oil (and not in the delicious way, I might add!), the artichoke spread on the bruschetta bread looks like it came from a jar, the fruits are not ripe, the desserts are confusing and the techniques they display are more reminiscent of frozen foods from a big box store than they are of true Italian cuisine, … Basically, the Olive Garden (heaven forbid!) produces better quality Italian food than this former Ann Arbor staple. Go to Cellar 849 in downtown Plymouth instead, or Mani Osteria in downtown Ann Arbor, if you want delicious Italian fare!! Slightly cheaper prices and 10 times the quality!!
Found this place on a whim and we were pleasantly surprised. The menu is creative but still has a lot of classic Italian dishes. Our waiter Ryan was exceptionally good. He led us through what amounted to a regional wine tasting before we made a choice to accompany the meal, and he knew a lot about the wines they serve and wine in general. Chicken Parm was tender and flavorful with a homemade character. Vegetable cannelloni was delicate and delicious with a creative lemon-bean pure. I also heard the table behind us raving about their food. The interior is welcoming but refined. However, the outside of the building is dated and cheap-looking. I had my doubts in the parking lot based on the flashy colors and somewhat dingy entry stoop. But the food and wine combined with the smart and relaxed service made it a new favorite for us in A2. Go, and trust the wine recommendations. It will enhance your meal.
