I’ve had Pilar’s twice since I moved to town: once catered, and once at the store front. The black bean tamale I first tried at a catered event was absolutely fantastic, the tamale made with beans instead of masa. When I visited the store front, I got the tamale special with a jalapeo and cheese tamale, rice and beans, slaw, plantains, and mocha drink. It was a bit expensive for the amount of food I got, as I am used to getting similar items for far cheaper. Still, the food was served very fast, so unfortunately I didn’t have to wait long. The tamale was good, but it wasn’t anything special. There was more cheese than jalapeo, and with it covered in salsa, I couldn’t enjoy the flavor on its own. The slaw was average, and the plantains are fried well. The rice and beans had more liquid than I’m used to, but still tasted good. The hot chocolate and coffee drink was also rich in taste, so I’m lucky I got a small! I’m still on the fence about this place, as I’m sure I may have had a better experience with the pupusas.
