Love this place – food is excellent and of high quality. The drawback now is that it the place has become popular and is packed around lunchtime. Good for them, though.

Potential, it has potential. I came hear looking for breakfast expecting some unique choices and small plate options. What I found was a coffee shop, no different than other perfectly fine coffee shops. If you want my business than add to your menu so I want to come here on the weekends! Have you seen the brunch business other places do in town? That is the action you want for your place, but it won’t happen without changes. I would think the other 2 people here with me today would agree.

Needing to kill some time on a weekday morning I chose to check out the new Songbird Cafe. Those expecting the Songbird to be the FlimFlam restaurant that previously occupied this will be sorely disappointed. Breakfast menu was limited to a few quiche choices or oatmeal; as well as your standard coffee house sweets. I was pretty much alone in the cafe at 10am. I ordered the bacon, onion, cheese quiche and a cup of regular coffee. The quiche was suprising tasty. The egg was flakey, the top was seasoned and slightly breaded. The dough on the bottom was not soggy. It was by no means a filling breakfast but it was a good coffee companion. Coffee by the way is $1 for each refill (VERY different from the flimflam). I’ll bring my own next time. The business model here is to cater to the lunch time crowds from the adjacent UofM buildings. The lunch menu has a large assortment of fresh sandwiches, reasonably priced. They are banking on their lunchtime salad bar being successful. The staff very nice and the restaurant has been nice updated from the previous tenant (although all the old chairs and tables remain). I’ll definitely come back here, for lunch, not breakfast.
