Zingerman’s Roadhouse DerailsLast night, 7/22/2016, we visited Zingermans Roadhouse for the first and last time. Anytime you mention that you are going to Ann Arbor people say that the trip would not be complete if we did not go to Zingermans Roadhouse. After all this hype and the catalogs, we finally made it to Ann Arbor. Unfortunately, we failed to enjoy what should have been an excellent dinner. The quality train derailed. The evening started downward when my wife entered the restaurant ten minutes before our reservation. We had reserved a table for two. She was asked to wait. When I arrived, she commented that other parties had been welcomed in without reservations. Twenty minutes later, we were led to a booth. When I informed the server that we had requested a table, we were led out to the lobby for another 10 minutes wait. Our waiter was both knowledgeable and helpful. We placed our orders, and soon experienced our second disappointment; my chili and my wifes appetizer were warm, but not hot. The third disappointment was the painfully loud din in our dining room; it was almost impossible to speak and be heard through the noise. Finally, our meals arrived. The train left the tracks. My side order of macaroni and cheese had a dark, burned skin and tasted burnt. Similarly, my wifes macaroni had a burnt taste. We asked the waiter to replace the macaroni because it was burnt; he did. He rationalized the error as one of over caramelizing the cheese. My wifes fried chicken was burnt black in many spaces; it was also dried out. Also, the mashed potatoes were not hot just warm. I had a hamburger on a stale bun. The tip off that the bun was stale were the stress cracks that developed. Well, the french fries were the equal of McDonalds best. After witnessing dinners derailment, we requested to talk with a manager. We showed the many areas of difficulty with dinner. She agreed that the chicken was burned. Somebody at Zingermans has eyes. As expected, she apologized but said the event was atypical, but we were served these items. She just could not imagine how the kitchen and server missed the obvious. Apology, apology, comped dinner. Then the macaroni arrived; the manager suggested that we enjoy it, but macaroni was not dinner.I am not sure where the concept of buying off dissatisfied customers developed, but I resent it. Neither my wife nor I wanted a free dinner. We came for a good dinner; we expected excellence. As we were waiting for dinner, I noticed the James Beard awards and a box of little books. One book was called Zingermans Guide to Giving Great Service. Obviously, nobody at Zingermans has read this pamphlet although while I was looking at Volume 4 of Zingermans Guide to Good Leading: A Lapsed Anarchists Approach to the Power of Beliefs in Business a man said that he would sign it for me. Was that the author? Why did he fail to recognize what was happening? This is a long review, I know, but there seems to have been many lapses at Zingermans. First, there was the chain of quality that should have started with the baker and ended with the person tasked with quality before the server picked up the meal. There seem to be many breaks. The manager should have shown more empathy and done something. I do not care about money, gift cards, freebies, etc. The second area, like the first, asks who was working to ensure quality? What was the manager doing? There were too many people sleeping at the switch. The train wreck was inevitable because nobody cared enough to avoid it.The other comment is about the customers/diners. How can they not know that they are being cheated; they are paying high prices for an inferior product? Many will go home and write four-star reviews about their experience. Reputation and reviews are only a part of understanding an experience. It seems that many establishments coast on their reputation hoping that there will be no train wrecks on the way to the bank. Businesses that last seem to last are those that take their leadership seriously and work diligently to exceed customer expectations. This review was written with the hope that Zingerman’s can arrest the downhill slide and deliver the quality and service they claim to espouse.
Do you love mushrooms?? Zingerman’s has created the most heavenly of creamy mushroom soup; you’ve never in your life had anything like it! Anyway it’s the only thing I’ve ordered there besides the bread…and who doesn’t go just for that?
Save your money and go to chili’s or Applebee’s. This place blows. Way overpriced. Weak food with no flavor. Their sandwiches rely on super thick slices of toasted bread. Wow… That’s creative! There is a Kroger next door that has prepared food as well…
This place is phenomenal. I’ve never had a sandwich here that I haven’t liked. Plus, they are very dietary-restriction friendly. It’s pretty much pick your meat (or veggie) section and order a sandwich from there. I love the chicken sandwiches because they all feature Amish chicken which is somehow the most amazing chicken on the planet. The sandwiches are obviously loaded, and huge, but you probably knew that already. If you’re in Ann Arbor at some point, I would highly recommend stopping by here.On another note, be sure to check out the desserts and other candies that they have, the candy bars in particular. I bought them for a holiday gift exchange and they were the most sought after item. Veruca chocolates are from an amazing Chicago chocolatier that I’ve personally met. She’s seriously an amazing woman with a great backstory (look it up, Heather is crazy cool and an inspiration for anyone). They also offer kosher desserts options, which is not exactly my area of expertise but…they exist and they sell them and that seems noteworthy.
My wife and I stopped for dinner sunday night after the races and eow were we impressed great spot parking lot was still full at 7pm we didnt have to wait great food amazing staff supper prices. We had to go back for breakfast monday morning before heading home. Loved that the beer menu was 95% local craft beers…we will be back
Maybe we were there on a bad day? I don’t think so.. After having frequented Zingerman’s since college in the early ’80’s, we decided to pick our son up from the U and take him to dinner at the Roadhouse.Zingerman’s Roadhouse was awful!1. Service was terrible. No one ever cleared any of our plates. When entrees came the food runner handed me my plate because there was no place to put it among the dirty dishes still on the table from bread, salad, etc. We stacked our own dirty dishes and asked someone to remove them. They did—-finally.2. Food—fish and chips: fish average, fries cold and greasy. Pork platter–small amount of tasty BBQ pork with not so tasty BBQ sauce squeezed over the top, mashed potatoes average, greens average. The real problem with the platter was that the excess water and bacon grease from the greens was in a pool on the plate and the entire platter of food was swimming in this greasy water—-NASTY! Hamburger and fries—hamburger average, fries cold and greasy.3. Price—-total rip-off for bad food! We paid $120(with tip—my husband will never stiff a waitress no matter what!) We had the entrees listed above, 2 salads, 2 soft drinks and a root beer float.4. Atmosphere—similar to a chain restaurant like Bennigan’s.5. Outcome—-we will never go to another Zingermans, so sad to see them get so big and ordinary.6. ONE BRIGHT SPOT—the free Zingerman’s bread on the table was still delicious. I hope they continue to get that right.
