Ellie’s Is The Bomb!. Living just around the corner from the joint, it was a no-brainer to check it out based on all the good reviews. Been there three times with my fiance’, and the food is the shizz. Not too many grills can make a tasty meal out of grilled cheese and soup, but they succeed, and then some. The Macedonian Grill is a tasty smorgasbord of killer meat and zucchini. They use fresh stash to prepare their meals. When you walk out, it’s with a good full…not a McDonalds full. I’d much rather support a local eatery staffed by a couple who bust their butts than eat at some over-priced, chain restaurant. Give em’ a shot. You won’t be disappointed.

Simply amazing. This is a little mom-and-pop place, the sort of which still exists in Metro Detroit, but is difficult to find, elsewhere. Mom (Ellie) does the cooking, and Pop runs the restaurant. The food is fantastic, specializing in dishes from Hungary and the Balkan states (think old Yugoslavia.) I strongly recommend the Pork Paprikash, served on a bed of homemade Spatzle, and the Macedonian Mixed Grill. Naturally, they serve a proper Hungarian Goulash (NOT the macaroni-based dish most Midwesterners are familiar with.) There are also Polish specials, once per week (I disremember which day. Apologies.)Coca-Cola fountain drinks are available. Prices are quite reasonable. Seating is limited, but adequate. The staff is friendly and eager to please. If you’re looking for a high-check, white-linen-tablecloth establishment, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for a friendly, non-corporate, friendly little mom-and-pop restaurant with amazing food, this is the spot you’ve been looking for. My only regret is that I can’t bolt a trailer hitch onto the front of the place and tow it back to Sacramento, with Ellie cooking in the kitchen all the while.

Favorite. Simply put-Ellie’s is my favorite place to eat. I started out going there with my father, then carried on the tradition with my son. We eat there on an average of once a week. Good food-especially the Polish and Hungarian Stuff. My son LOVES the Chicken Fingers. The Kremish- a pastry of some sort-is delicious.

Great food. Polish night 2 days a week. Hungarian food daily. Very authentic. Home made soup daily. Great prices.

I happened to see the words Hungarian Food in the window of this little restaurant as I was driving down Coolidge one day. I was kind of excited because there is no Hungarian food that I know of in the area. I stopped for lunch and had stuffed cabbage and while it wasn’t as good as my grandmother’s, it was pretty tasty. I also enjoyed the soup. On a return visit, I had the paprikash and it was just okay.

Ellie’s – A Coney with a twist – Oak Park’s best kept secret.. Ellie’s is more than just your average coney. They have excellent breakfasts, hearty dishes, and great daily specials (the fish and mac is to die for). But look a little further on the menu and you’ll find a variety of Macedonian and Polish food. Ellie’s is family owned and operated, and on any given day you’ll find Ellie (yes, there really is an Ellie) back in the kitchen cooking her specialties. As far as atmosphere, it’s on par with most Coney’s, but the personality of this place is truly unique.
