Ellie’s started 1983 as a Breakfast Coney Island joint then in 2003 revamped as a Hungarian, Macedonia n Polish lunch dinner eating spot. We visited the day after Macedonia is no longer a country that Greece has been fighting over the name for 27 years. Now the new country North Macedonia so here we have the cutest couple plating up the real deal for the former Macedonia. No hipster food to be found, last of the mom n Pop places are getting so hard to find. Only eating spot that advertising Macedonia meals and only 2 nd authentic Hungarian meals traditional Goulash and Chicken Paprikash outstanding. This place is as about down home as you can get. I loved the European foods that one can get here- from Macedonian to Hungarian to Polish depending on what day you arrive. Who cares if this place doesn’t have super swanky leather booths, mood lighting, and hipsters waiting to get in! This is genuine authentic food served with care and it just harkens back to a simpler time when the food was served piping hot and soothed the soul. This is not a date place nor is it a pretentious place; the service is attentive as the place is small. Our young waitress Barbara was a pleasure to meet, completely on top of her game. The restaurant had something unique about it, food reflecting the Macedonian owner-chefs Jonce and Elica Llievski. Buoyed by the popularity of their home cooking, the Llievskis decided to make Central European dishes the focus of their cozy. Ellies Balkan specialties include Pleskavitsa, a seasoned beef and pork Balkan burger n onions; Kebap, seasoned beef and pork links I call Chevapi n Ranichi, grilled pork skewers; Macedonian Mixed Grill, be Balkan burger, pork skewer, Kebap and pork tenderloin. So outrageous flavorful Dinner plates include Djuvech rice, a moist, tomato-based rice with bits of vegetables, and delectable, vinegary coleslaw called Macedonian slaw so unique so addictive. I especially like the bone-in Chicken Paprikash, served in a paprika sauce over house-made spetzle and Hungarian beef tips with spetzle, Goulash (stew) and the best ever Spinach Pie called Burek #elliesgrill #macedonia #hungarian #letsguide #motorcitymunchers albeerpoe.blogspot.com
