Went here for my birthday in december, the food was great, just as good as saganos and there was only a five minute wait. Added bonus, got to sit next to Mateen Cleaves and his lovely wife, great experience every time so far
Attention to Detail!. This is a regular spot for us to dine in Grand Blanc. The owner and staff are very observant to your needs and really make you feel welcome. The chef really puts on a great show and it is the best value for the money and the quality of food is outstanding. I know there are problems in any establishment, but I have had a good experience everytime. I have recently moved here from Ann Arbor and there is one location there. It was really poorly run and our food was not good at all. Never went back. I was very hopeful to try it out again so we came in for dinner. We come back at least twice a month, and the owner always remembers us! We were in recently and a young girl was there for her 8th birthday. She was so excited because it was here favorite place to eat. They missed nothing helping her celebrate that night. Always lots of fun!
Just go to Sagano’s. Ichiban is a joke of a Japanese restaurant. I ordered some sushi from them when they first opened and was disappointed with their quality. I have always hoped that another Japanese restaurant would open in Grand Blanc to give Sagano some competition. However after my receiving my sushi I found myself thinking two things. First, I was surprised to find peanuts in my crunchy roll; I would think that would be an important ingredient to list in their description. Personally, I don’t believe peanuts belong anywhere near my sushi. Setting my surprise aside, I still found myself disappointed. The quality simply isn’t, satisfactory. The sushi was loose and didn’t taste like any sushi I have had; the tempura udon was bland and unauthentic. I’m Chinese, and honestly it tastes like some Chinese chef trying to make Japanese food. I felt cheated when I ordered tempura udon and discovered that the soup used, was basically a watery wonton broth. On top of all that, their service was a little rude. I felt like the man upfront was annoyed at having to do his job and serve me. Again, I’ll say that I was excited to have another option besides Sagano for sushi. I have had some bad service from Sagano, but I’ve put up with it because the food was good. At the end of the day, Ichiban just isn’t worth it. I’d rather drive an extra 15 minutes and pay a dollar or two more for Sagano, than feel cheated with cheap food at Ichiban.
Ichiban was a great experience. Our hibachi chef was awesome! The food taste so fresh and is so filling! If you are looking for a fun and delicious dinner you should definitely check out Ichiban!
Will not be returning.. Upon arrival.. I was not greeted. The vibe was rude. Our server, Carey was extremely unfriendly and acted as if it was out of her way to serve us. I still tip well because as a server I know what it is like. But I also know I do not treat people that way myself. The sushi was decent but the menus did not give good descriptions of the rolls and what is inside. My pregnant friend had gotten a tempura roll. Little did she know there was caviar in it so she could not have it, disappointing. The fried rice tasted pre-made. Overall I was upset to have wasted my money on the entire experience, I will continue to go to Sagano, who’s food has never been upsetting, and who’s wait staff is always friendly.
Don’t Be Fooled (Sushi Bar). I’m Japanese and new to the area. We heard of Ichiban and decided to check it out. First of all, the hostess was not friendly at all. As a matter of fact this establishment is managed (owned?) by other Asian nationals, and definitely are not Japanese. Out of the 10 or so staff we saw, not one was Japanese. Secondly, the sushi chef didn’t look our way once, even though we were seated at the counter right in front of him. No smile, no greeting, no nothing. The only sushi chefs allowed to have that kind of attitude are famous ones at five star establishments. The sushi platter looked ok at first. But then we noticed he had used rice to stick a small plate and a cocktail glass onto the big platter. In Japanese common sense, this is taboo, to use rice that hard working farmers made in such a wasteful manner. Every grain of rice is to be appreciated. Then, we were at a loss for words when a plastic cube he put into the cocktail glass started to light up in rainbow colors. Sure, it LOOKS fun, but you would never see this in Japan. Not to mention the poorly presented daikon shreddings (tsuma) in the glass with the plastic toy. Finally, we were at a loss of our appetite when we tasted the sushi. The rice must have been at least two days old. It was dry, hard, and even had some crunchy parts to it. It also did not have the scent or flavor of sushi vinegar that should have been used. Don’t be fooled, this is NOT JAPANESE. Go to Sagano’s if you want the real thing, the owner is actually Japanese as is one of the sushi chefs.
Not impressed. I’ll continue to go back to Sagano’s.
