Had a Nice Dinner. Nice Gyro Salad here, arrived before a Tiger game, but still managed to get a seat! Nice Gyro meat salad, good food. But a bit on the dirty side, don’t you hate it when you are looking closely at the plates and the glasses for food bits and traces of lipstick? Could use a good scrubbing!
You’re a dopa if you don’t eat the OPA!. The last time I was in Greektown was circa the late 1980s, as I was driving south from where I used to live in the Upper Peninsula. It was a weird scene there after dark, with policemen literally standing elbow-to-elbow on every street corner to keep the seething tide of crime at bay from the gritty city. And this was LONG before Detroit’s latest downward plunge (but AFTER the Devil’s Night phenomenon took hold.) Having a meal at New Parthenon was the only pleasant part of that experience. So on what’s likely to be my last visit to Motown, I ate there again. This is the only place I order flaming saganaki, and I eat at Greek joints all over the world. The fire show is fun, of course, but you also have a big square of toasty-crusty kasseri when it cools.I was pleased with my main, called raganata, a rack of lamb ribs that I haven’t seen on other Greek restaurant menus. It was tender, flavourful and HUGE. What I remember best from that course were the green beans, cooked until they were mushy (al dente veggies is an Italian thing, I guess) with tomatoes, minced carrots and some spices. The flavour was slightly exotic, for green beans. The decor inside might strike some as cliched, with the statues and Greek bric-a-brac. To me, it’s classic, especially the huge mural that faces you as you walk in. The celebrity photos of athletes and entertainers who have been there remind you that this is part of Detroit dining history. Worth a visit to soak up that Greektown experience. More enjoyable in the daylight — less dangerous.
This is a busy and noisy restaurant in Greek town. Some of the food’s pretty decent but we found that the lamb kebab was tough and overcooked. The lamb chops very good as with flaming cheese appetizer.
Best Opa in town! Rest of their fare is average. The bus boys work amazingly harder than the wait staff who tend to be grumpy. Lemon rice soup reigns.
I thought the food was interesting and there was plenty of it. The atmosphere was fun and the service great!
Go elsewhere. Overpriced and so-so quality. The food was lukewarm and hot in the center, telling me it was microwaved. YUK.
