Mothers Day 2015. Walked into Gilbert & Blakes on Mothers Day. We had a party of four. The place was half empty. Because of not having a reservation, we could not be seated. Walked out. Another party was leaving, we asked them if they had reservation, no they did not. They had dinner without reservation. DISCRIMINATION. I should have called the media.
Fine dining to be had here!. Top notch quality and a great presentation. A delight to the palette—
I went to this restaurant for the first time and definitely won’t be returning. Appetizer was great ( sesame crusted seared tuna) but its hard to mess that up. However my entree was less than desirable, especially at a place that claims to be all about steak & seafood. I got the New York strip cooked medium. When it came it was fairly tough which made me think I should’ve ordered med rare. However, my boyfriend got the same steak medium rare & it was also tough. The other thing was there was NO seasoning on it at all. All I need is some salt and pepper during preparation at least. I have had far better steaks at home for much less money.. For that matter, I could have gone to the chain restaurant down the road and had a vastly better steak meal for less too. It’s just sad because good, locally owned places are too few in number in the Lansing area, and IMO this place is one of the reasons why. It’s far too over-priced, especially for low quality. People take a chance, it’s bad, so they stick to the same old chain places. So disappointing & forgettable.
Average. Nice atmosphere – average food.
Yes, it has slipped. G&B used to be our goto place for a nice dinner. But it has slipped. Years ago it always seemed to be busy, lately it is usually mostly empty. The first time I ever went I ordered Swordfish Oscar, and loved it. It was a big slab of swordfish topped with real blue crab lump crabmeat, hollandaise sauce, and asparagus nicely cooked, all then on top of some creamy mashed potatoes.Over the years going here I normally would get the same thing, and sadly I saw the meal change. The portion of fish kept getting smaller (the price did not). Sometimes it would have wild rice under it instead of potatoes, not a big deal. Most recently it was pretty bad. It is no longer on the menu, but tenderloin oscar (oscar being a preparation of protein topped with crab, hollandaise, and asparagus) was a special, and swordfish was still on the menu, so I asked them to prepare it anyway and the chef (cook?) said he could. The portions had shrunk even more, the asparagus was both undercooked and they had neglected to remove the tough bottom end that is almost inedible. The fish also was undercooked, and seemed to have a questionable texture, kinda spongy, not the swordfish I was used to. The lump blue crab meat was gone, replaced with shredded crab of bland flavor and questionable origin. It was also full of shells. So either they used cheap canned crab meat that was mechanically separated and may contain shells and then didn’t bother to check, or, in picking their own crab meat, they weren’t very careful. Either way, that is a black mark for a restaurant of this price point. Now I did order something not on the menu, but steak oscar was the special that night and swapping in a swordfish steak for a beef steak should not have caused the chef consternation. They apologized profusely and comped us dessert but it was still a sore let down. My wife had the duck and found it to be okay, we didn’t talk about her meal that much though, being mostly focused on what a letdown mine was. They claim to be all about fish, with fresh fish flown in daily. However every fish on their menu is usually in stock at Meijer, if you have the ability to fly fish in daily, why not carry something not available elsewhere all over town? It seems every restaurant serves variations on the same seafood dishes. Give me something I can’t get anywhere else, please, just a tip. Good things? The bread is still delicious, and they have the best french onion soup in town IMO.
Below average at best – the apps are decent smoked whitefish dip for example – but I have not had one entree that is decent – bland, bland, bland – Staff needs impv as well
Nice place, friendly service, slightly below average food for a premium price.
