Having been to the other prominent sushi places available in Grand Rapids I can say that sushi kuni is similar to several others in the area. We ordered the tiger, the Vegas, the Bbq, Mount Fuji and some shashimi and miso soup. The waitstaff was a bit more helpful than we are used to. Their menu is quite large and they have a little more of a selection than some of the other sushi places. The sake we had was good, my wife and I drank the whole bottle, the sushi was well put together and tasty. Over all they are one of the better sushi places in town but not by much. Again the food was good but their waitstaff is definitely light years ahead of the other places in town, especially maru whose waitstaff was so bad that we have never returned. So if you are the owner/management reading this, I gave you a 4.5, please get your men’s bathroom fixed and have a toilet seat that isn’t falling off of the toilet. Maybe even splurge on repainting and sprucing it up a bit.

Great Sushi Bar. I tried this place today because of the high ratings and am glad to say it lived up to its reputation. Great miso and mushroom soup as well as excellent sushi and tempura ice cream. Everything was excellent.

The best sushi I’ve had in Grand Rapids. Sushi Kuni is the bust sushi bar in Grand Rapids that I have been to. It is great for a small group or for solo dining, as I often do. I recommend sitting at the bar if you can so you can watch the chef work his craft. I don’t usually use exclamations, but oh my god this place is amazing. The first time I came here, the waiter was very helpful in teaching me about sushi bar etiquette and offering me suggestions for what to eat. So don’t be frightened if you have no idea what you are doing. This restaurant has the best miso soup I have ever had. If you’re new and don’t know what to get, I recommend trying the 4 Appetizer Sushi, which is basically the chef’s choice of 4 of the more popular sushi and sashimi. He gave me some tuna, shrimp, salmon, and fish cake sashimi and sushi. All of which were great. The specialty rolls are beautifully made and arranged in traditional Japanese style. When the chef hands me that beautiful work of culinary art I was almost brought to tears. I wolf down those 8 pieces like piranha on a James Bond villain. Turn your head away for a moment and look back and it’s gone. I will say this: all that food is expensive if you order too much. Of course a lot of Americans are very hesitant to the idea of raw fish, but after a little nudging, I was convinced and dove head first into it and have fallen in love. So if it’s your first or second time, why not splurge a little bit if you’ve got the money and want to treat yourself? I like this even more than Marado (not that Marado isn’t also awesome). I will be back. You can be sure of that.
