We loved it !! We had the food first at my Granddaughter revail party at Riverside Art Gallery Yummy. So recently my granddaughter had adenoids removed and MAIZ was her first request for solid food meal. Btw Margarita was Awesome We will be back especially Sunday kids eat Free !!!! Awesome Sauce
Luckily for me, I was able to get a seat at the bar for a late dinner at Maiz. They’re open later than many restaurants in the area, so I was happy to try it out. The bartender was very enjoyable to talk to and was helpful with recommendations. I ended up getting a large margarita half off during the late night happy hour, which was blended with fresh lime and orange. It was a fantastic margarita. To eat, I had one taco papas, one fish taco, and one taco avocado. The potato taco was pretty flavorful, which I ended up taking home and eating later. It had a cool dressing on top, which I rather liked. With the habanero and other spicy salsa, it was really flavorful and kicked the food up a notch. The fish taco was okay, but it was nothing to talk about (standard beer battered fish). I didn’t expect to like the avocado taco, but I actually did. It was lightly fried, yet creamy on the inside. With the toppings and dressings, it was quite appetizing. I’m not sure how authentic the place was, but it was pretty good Tex-Mex food.
So… I’ve never felt strongly enough to write a negative review until now!!!My friends & I decided to venture out of our neck of the woods and try somewhere new this past Saturday night. By doing this we couldn’t have chosen a worse restaurant if we had tried! I ordered a Sangria and when I went to take a sip out of my straw I quickly noticed there was a piece of hair stuck inside. For obvious reasons I was totally disgusted. I removed an extremely long, black piece of hair from my straw. Right away, I flagged our waitress over to our table. Rightfully so, I was very upset! I told/showed her the long, black piece of hair that I was forced to hold with my fingers. She said let me get my manager. After an unacceptable amount of time waiting, to the point that my finger tips were turning white from pinching the piece of hair between my fingers. I hear ya… totally gross right?! Anyways, finally the manager came to our table. She takes the piece of hair from me and starts wrapping it around her finger, while listening to my frustration. YES!!! The manager of MAIZ restaurant continuously wrapped a piece of hair, found in my drink, around her finger! I explained to her that we would not be paying and listed a number of reasons as to why. She said let me get my manager. Hmmm… I thought she was the manager? Eventually, Jason showed up to our table. Manager no. Owner yes. I must say Jason came with quite a defensive attitude right out of the gate. Very surprising, since HE is the owner. Instead of being apologetic and accommodating to his customer like one would expect. NOPE!!! He tried to justify the hair in my drink and question my character. UNBELIEVABLE!!! When I proceeded to tell him I was not paying, he took his phone out of his pocket and said let me call the owner. Wait!!! You are the owner. Minutes later Jason approaches our table offering us a free dessert or drink. REALLY?! I, of course and rightfully so said no. Would he or anyone in their right mind want or feel like eating or drinking anything else at that point? The hair was bad enough, but the manager wrapping it around her finger put me over the edge. Now, for the icing on the cake, Jason, the owner, not the manager calling the owner, was really calling the police. YES!!! He called the police because his customer found a long, black piece of hair in her drink and didn’t want to pay. Our entire table was in a state of shock to say the least. Even more shocked that with an owner like Jason, MAIZ has stayed in business. In all my life, in all my travels to restaurants located near, far around the world etc… have I ever experienced anything or anyone like MAIZ and Jason. I highly recommend you stay as far away as possible from MAIZ and Jason. There are so many wonderful dinning options available in our area. I feel confident as long as you stay away from MAIZ and Jason you will have made an excellent choice. I would like to apologize to the two officers whom Jason called for such a ridiculous reason. I would also like to apologize to Ypsilanti residents who may have truly needed the police at that time for their safety and or health and because of Jason they were not available right away. Thank you for your time:)I WANT IT NOTED I GIVE MAIZ AND JASON 0 STARS, BUT I CAN’T POST WITH 0;(

Great salsa & chips. Owner & staff friendly. Fun place with great food & drinks.
They have to improve!. The chips and salsa were amazing, but that’s where the good part of our dining experience ended. We had to wait to be seated, despite the fact there were numerous empty tables. We ordered drinks from their specialty menu only to be told over 15 min. later they didn’t have the ingredients. I then asked what kind of wine they had. The waitress didn’t know so she asked the bartender. Unfortunately, she forgot by the time she walked the 15 feet to our table. My husband ordered a shrimp dish. Again, some 10-15 min. later we were told they were out of shrimp. I ordered the enchiladas which were hard and dry. There was some tomato substance on top, very little of it, but the ends of the enchiladas were brown and brittle. I don’t know where the cheese was. They were simply awful. They’d only been open for two weeks but it was such a bad experience, I don’t know if we’ll try it again.
