Beware of the cleaning chemicals used. We have eaten at this restaurant in the past and had good food and good service but recently have encountered a big problem. The chemical they are currently using to clean the tables is very strong smelling and has an unpleasant toxic odor that fills the entire restaurant. It was so strong that I could not stay in the restaurant. After leaving my lungs hurt and my chest was tight. We got our food to go and tried to tell the employees that the cleaner was potentially unhealthy. The staff was rude and defensive. There is a language barrier and they argued that they have to disinfect the tables (which I totally agree with but also know that there are disinfectants that don’t smell toxic). If you have any sensitivities to smell, breathing problems or young children steer clear of this place!!
Don’t waste your time and money. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food in the Brainerd Lakes area your best bet is Taco Bell. I thought that no one would be able to top Poncho and Lefty’s for horrible tasting Mexican food, but El Tequila’s has won the title. I ordered the beef enchiladas with red sauce. The red sauce is just tomato sauce from a can. Not a tomato based sauce, just tomato sauce. I don’t even think they put any salt and pepper in it. I am sure at some point I have eaten a meal worse than this one, but I can’t remember when.

Good Mexican. Solid place for Mexican food. I had the beef fajitas and they were rather good. Is it authentic? Yeah, for the most part. A bit overpriced but everything else in the area is too. Recommended.
Won’t be returning. My husband and I thought we would check it out, to compare to another great Mexican restaurant in town. The waiter was friendly, the food came fast, but it was almost inedible! Gross, dried out tamale, that tasted like sawdust…I did not care for the enchilda that had hamburger in it, it all tasted bad to me. My husband did like his fake seafood enchilda, but he never complains. Huge menu selection, but I’d rather go to Taco Bell! Pancho and Lefty’s will be getting our business.
Best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to!!! The food is quick and delicious. I had the chicken chimichangas and they were awesome. Great flavor and they give you tons of food for the price.
