You have a large party of about a dozen people, you want to sit around a round table while hot food is constantly brought to you. You want variety and are more interested in the food than in the dining experience or the ambiance? Well Mandarin Kitchen might just fit that particular bill. This strip mall dim-sum restaurant has all the grace of any traditional dining hall in Asia. Bustling crowds, busy waiters and waitresses and waits for service are common and perhaps to be expected. Dimsum carts are pushed around with hot wares served directly on your table and the total tally of your consumption noted on a paper slip. I went here with a large group of experienced dim-sum eaters at around 11 AM on a weekend. This it turned out was the ideal time and crowd to go here with. We sent an advance party early so the much known woes of long waits didn’t trouble us. Also the large group size meant we could try as many things as possible. As I understand, the dimsums often vary in variety depending on the day and season so experiences may vary. Pretty soon it became clear that this place is a rather poor choice for vegans or vegetarians. But if you eat meat, things look good. We started with jellyfish with sour veg followed by multiple servings of pork buns, congee, seafood dimsum, a lovely cilantro flavored veg dumpling, lo mai gai, fried crab dumplings, spring rolls and fried bean curds. Everything was fresh, hot and good, in the sticks to basket, sweaty kind of way. Besides the dimsum, you have to partake in the tea and dessert menu. We had egg tarts, pineapple buns, coconut buns, fresh fruit tarts and a few other treats. The egg tarts were decent and the pineapple buns the best of the lot. The meal left us unable to move and about 25 bucks per head lighter. It was however a satisfying weekend brunch. The key here is to time and manage your visit, choose the right items and complement sweeter main course with spicy interludes. Would I wait out in the cold for this? Maybe not for too long, but in good weather, with good company? Sure! …… Maybe 20 minutes or so. potsoup.wordpress.com
