Met some friends here and ended up staying and catching up two hours. The food was good as was the service. I had the shrimp tacos while others had salmon and cioppino. All was very good. The server was extremely patient and efficient. I would definitely go here again.

This place is a hit or miss on all levels! The wait staff sucks 90% of the time. The food is way over priced for the quality and half the time it’s good and the other it’s horrible. They have so much potential but so far they have dropped the ball! They need to close for a week and retrain the wait staff and cooks!!!! Oh yea and the portions seem to get smaller every time you go but the price remains the same!!

I chose the spicy shrimp tacos, the description in the menu sounded good….however the slaw on them was way too saucy and created a huge mess. The shrimp were cooked well and had good flavor but all of it together was not that great, in my opinion. If they used much less mayo on the slaw, gave you a lime to squeeze they would be better. The rice casserole was a pile of mush, overcooked big time. My meal didn’t totally suck but it wasn’t great either. They need to shorten their menu and focus on creating really good, well thought out and properly cooked food. I will try it again but I will stay away from the tacos.

Very Disappointing. Very disappointing. Waited nearly an hour for a very good baconburger that was a bit overdone, a nothing special burrito bowl, and a cheeseburger cooked to resemble a hockey puck. The table service was OK – the server wasn’t to blame for the crappy kitchen. Wait a year before visiting – they’ll either be much better, or they’ll be gone.

Has Potential, but falls flat. Tavern on the Hill has a lot of potential to be great, but they fall flat. Their overly large menu means that they have something for everyone, but it’s all of mediocre quality. I’d love it if they’d focus their menu more to include fewer items that they are able to do well. I had the Elvis burger which has the potential be great, but way too much peanut butter, meant that I could taste anything else, much less move my mouth. Two ladies that I was with had the same pasta dish, but they were very different in quality. One had way too much alfredo sauce, while the other had the perfect balance of tomato and alfredo. How does that even happen?Food seems to be delivered cold which I attribute to the too large menu requiring many items to be made in advance and then ‘nuked’. Microwaved food is easy to spot because it’s way too hot when served and then gets cold within minutes, or arrives with a cold menu and overdone outer edge. Please focus your menu so that you can cook everything to order and ensure quality control of your soux chefs.

My husband & I went on a double date to Tavern on the Hill last week and really enjoyed it. The drinks were great and our server was fantastic. The menu was really big, which would be nice if it didn’t feel so overwhelming. I’ve had friends tell me the same. However, what we ordered was delicious. We’re heading back for another date night tonight!

Diverse menu, locally sourced. Due to an anticipated major shift in the demographics of school aged children, the city of Duluth, MN went through a significant reorganization of the public schools several years ago, closing some, modernizing some, and repurposing others.Part of this plan was demolishing one of the two junior high schools (grades 7-9) in the eastern portion of the city, Woodland Junior, which is within spitting distance of the University of Minnesota’s Duluth branch. The resulting large piece of vacant property and the adjacent woods, so close to the University, proved a lure for potential developers, who envisioned a large mixed use development similar to the Main U campus’ Dinkytown. Apartments, retail, services, and restaurants are at the center of the plan, with the first couple phases now open. The first full service restaurant to open is called Tavern on the Hill, and is part of the local Blackwoods hospitality group. The debut also marks the opening of the first full bar within staggering distance of the campus. The restaurant touts its locavore connection, sourcing as much locally as they are able to, (which really doesn’t explain items like ahi and North Atlantic Salmon) and offer a very diverse menu of sandwiches, pizza, flatbreads, full plates, tacos and sushi (designed for the Duluth palate). Several menu items are new to the area, including fish tacos and dishes with bison meat.A small ‘market’ just inside the door of the restaurant offers take-away menu items, prepared and packaged to go.We hit the restaurant on 11/18, and had ‘one of the best tasting burgers’ we had experienced in a long time, especially the quality of the meat. Servers offered the burgers in one of two modes: pink or not pink, and the kitchen obliged. Other dishes sampled, including the pizza, were also good. Craft cocktails and beers are available, and the restaurant is open daily at 11AM, closing at 1 AM, except Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 2 AM. burgersdogspizza.com
