Woodland location: much improved room from its Hermantown ICO days (its own restroom!), and pleased with fresh tekka maki and very generous lunch portion curry with ribeye. Tea: okay. I really enjoyed the window table.September 2018 visit: good food continues. And the mark of a genuine Japanese meal: the tea is now right.

Used to be my favorite restaurant for sushi and curry in Duluth, then another, which I won’t name, came along. I very rarely go to Zen House these days, and only ever for curry.

Bad kitchen standards. I used to be a fan of Zen House. In fact I was a huge fan from the begin. I still remember saying.. Finally, a sushi place in Duluth! The staff has always been really friendly and eager to please. But the more I have been eating there lately. The worse it gets, and it seems to be always with the quality of the food. The basic salad to start off, the cherry tomatoes that you get with them have been discolored, as if they were not ripe enough to eat. In fact, one of them looked over ripe. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and took a small bite yet it did not taste right at all. I complained to the waitress one time, she saw what I ment, applogized, shrugged it off and didn’t really try to do anything about it. Because the next time I came in, once again they were bad tomatoes. Ok well I still like the rest of the food so I gave up on the salad and now I get the Miso soup instead.Ok so this other time I got their Zen Roll. Which is usually great except the Avocado was bad (that dark green old mushy-almost to the rotting point) I had a different waitress, she seemed to at least care and offered to make a fresh one with a fresh Avoado. Which was fabulous. But then I also got a barbeque eel roll which I usually love but this time I got a couple super fatty peices which the eel tasted like rubber. It was not good at all and ended up just eating half of it. Today I got their ricebowl, generally great. Hard to go wrong, and priced well at only 4.95. Things went wrong with ordering the beef but instead I got chicken. I was going to just eat it without complaining but the chicken was cooked a little too long and was kinda dry. So I sent it back. They were really nice about taking it back and making me another one right away with beef. The real problem was that the beef was super chewy too. But the worse part about it was that my rice bowl was half full of the terriaki sauce that it was like a soup. It was unbearable to eat the rice because there was so much sauce. I couldn’t believe how bad it was. Honestly it was disgusting because that sauce has such a strong flavor, just a tiny bit of it would have been fine. But its like they were punishing me for sending back the first bowl that they cook just hurried and dumped the sauce in.. it really ruined the rice. Keep in mind this was not a soup.A couple sitting at a table right by me was asked how was their food and I over head the girl say that the fried octopus they got was mainly just deep fried breading and barely had any octopus in it. What a joke. Not only that but she didn’t take anything off the bill. After all these bad experiences, they have showed me that they really don’t care about the quality of their food nor the standards of the food that leaves the kitchen before it reaches the customer. As much as I had enjoyed their food in the past, I won’t be coming back for awhile..
