Great Look, Great Menu, Great Meat Platter…Slow Service. Inconsistent Food. I so want to give this place a four or five star, but maybe on our next visit. I am so convinced this place could be awesome, We will give it another try. It has only been in business one year. A modern open bar with a warm feel. One side of the room and the back are away from the televisions. The bar has big screens. Sports on!. Kitchen is open. A full bar with a great beer and vodka list. We were excited about the menu. Then the reality set in. The place was semi full on a Thursday night and only one waiter, with a newbie shadowing her. Frustrations began. Horrible way to start off. Such a long wait for water and menus. She was an amazing waiter. They need to clone her. Explained everything. We ordered some beer and vodka, the meat, cheese and pickled grapes platter with the Russian egg (think of it as a pickled deviled egg). This was FANTASTIC. We would come back for this platter and a beer. Once the order was in, it didn’t long for someone to deliver it to us. We also ordered two of the six different perogis. Disappointing. There are different ways to make a perogis, I prefer the dough to be more like a bun and then baked, their version resembles a pot sticker. Five to an order. They are ample in size. Inside of both the traditional and asian perogis tasted the same and could only be described as mush. The only taste was the dipping sauce. That is all we tried. The bathrooms are super clean. The decor is fun. Parking is in a pay lot or city street (depending on the night, could be a three block walk). This is a very safe and clean park of the city. I would recommend you check this place out if in Uptown. Just be prepared to wait for service and even longer to pay your tab. We will be back.
Great happy hour (most everything is 2 for 1 and $2 off apps!). Great variety og tasty cocktails (Moskow Mule!) Pierogis were great!! So were the lamb skewers. Our server, Matthew, was exceptional. Attentive, helpful, friendly and sincere! Great experience!
Exceptional. We purchase Living Social coupons to try new venues. I had eaten at the Moscow on the Hill and wasn’t impressed with the Russian Cuise. My girl freind and I went last night and were very impressed with the food, service and venue. We had two small plates (Escargo & Meatballs) and both were perfect. The meatballs (3) came in a small skiillet with a red sauce that had wonderful flavor. The escarrgo were removed from the shell and cook in a galic parmesan cheese mixture that was light and not overbearing. We also ordered two large plates. The piergoi (comrade version) were home made and cook to prefection. We also order the cabage roll which had the same meat filling as the meatball, but seemed to have a different red suace which brought everything together again for exceptional flavor. The portions were good and the presentation exceptional. In the future and there will be may future meals for us at the hammer and sickle. We will either order small plates or large plates. Neither of us are drinkers so can’t comment on the libation but the service and atmosphere were very welcoming. I would recommend Hammer and Sickle to anyone its a great experience.
Excellent food & service!! please figure out why your water tastes bad tho, we will be back!
Being a resident of uptown, I’m used to the variety of bars but hammer n sickle is above and beyond. The atmosphere is great and the service is better. The staff is knowledgeable and they have great recommendations! Try the honeybee cocktail, my favorite! The food is amazing and you can tell a lot of thought and preparation went into every detail of the menu. I’m highly impressed. Watch out, there is a need kid on the block
Amazing food. Located where Kinsen used to be, Hammer and Sickle is, in one word, amazing. I went out tonight with my girlfriend tonight without plans to eat at Hammer and Sickle and found ourselves eating a divine selection of plates. The escargot caught our eyes immediately and we ordered them. I’d had them while growing up in France and her in Vietnam and the chef’s take on them was scrumptious. The caviar was a first for both of us and was accompanied by belini’s and shots of house infused vodka to complement. We finished with a lobster stroganoff, each bite piled with succulent lobster with mushrooms in cream sauce piled on fresh spaetzle that were just perfect. We rolled ourselves out of the restaurant happy and satisfied and coudlnt’ help ourselves writing our first oinline restaurant reviews ever, because seriously this place is the best food i’ve eaten in uptown!
