Not good at all. The dining area is run down. Tables and chairs are cheap. I could deal with that if the food was good but it really wasn’t. I grew up eating Carbone’s pizza and I loved it. This did not even compare. From the crust, sauce, toppings it just wasn’t good on any point. I was so excited to have a Carbone’s close to me again (just moved to the area a year ago). Unfortunately I will not be returning.
Not all Carbone’s are created equal. Ok – I grew up in the area and I know that this Carbone’s has been here forever. It’s a mystery to me how this place stays in business – for the longest time they didn’t deliver and whenever we stopped there it was usually empty. After many years of moving around and living/working in different suburbs I have a greater appreciation of the Carbone’s chain as a whole but this location continues to disappoint me even though it’s my hometown. (The best ones I’ve been to were/are the Lindstrom( I think this one closed), West St Paul, Hudson, and Eagan locations.The pizza has good flavor – but it is really really really THIN pizza compared to other mom and pop pizza joints. And when it’s that thin you can’t put hardly any sauce on it or the crust won’t get crisp. So most of the time you get a pizza that tastes like cheese crust with a the sauce painted on. And the given the price I don’t feel the value is there. (For the same price I could drive to Hugo Savoy and get a saucy/cheesy pizza that weighs twice a much) The menu is limited so NO subs/hoagies or calzones (some locations call calzones -pizza sandwices) which are usually my favorites at most Carbone’s. The sandwiches offered are wierd and after trying a couple I’m not a fan. When your in a town that has 7-8 pizza choices (I loathe the corp chains- ie Papa McDomino Hut) – you either have to have the BEST pizza/wings or offer something different like hoagies and calzones. Perfect example is River Falls WI (my college town) we would go to Steve’s Pizza for the pizza and Luigi’s pizza for the hoagies, calzones, nachos, and taco salads.
Carbone’s What else is there to say?. Well I have to say that like the other Carbone’s that I have tried, the Pizza is awesome, Who doesn’t love the perfectly cooked crust with that unique sauce flavor and perfect balance of seasoning with cheese and toppings? Excellent at always. My only complaint is NO SUBS!! Now if you have ever had one of their subs they are EXCELLENT, that sweet garlic/mayo with cheese and onions and your choice of meatd heated on an incredible soft and tasty bun. My mouth is watering just thinking about the taste. We have to go all the way down to WBL to get our sub fix and now even though it is much further for us to drive we have made the WBL store our normal one since they do have subs there. If you ever get a chance to try one, I recommend you do. Maybe enough people will request them and Flake will start making them there.
