Open all but major holidays since 2010 in the quiet suburb of Minnetonka, accolades rolling in from various sources claiming that a twenty minute drive from Downtown Minneapolis was necessary to taste Minnesotas best Donut, it was early Tuesday morning that GPS was calibrated to find a small place in the middle of a Strip-Mall, YoYo Donuts patronage around 7:00am largely comprised of Senior Citizens plus a father with his pre-K son.Family owned and operated from the start, an old recipe descended from one mans Grandfather the base upon which business was founded with plans to make each Donut daily from scratch, it is shortly after entering that guests are greeted by pleasant staff positioned behind glass cases, the daily variety neither as expansive nor expensive as the likes of Glam Doll, Mojo or Cardigan.Focused largely on classics but not opposed to newer ideas like Maple Bacon or Red Velvet, a mixed half-dozen felt sufficient to gauge quality with first bites of a fluffy ring beneath Raspberry Frosting attesting to blended Flours left to leaven longer than most, it was from here that tasting transitioned to the oft-photographed Dirt and Worms, a thin layer of crumbled Cookies mostly what would anticipate while the Cake itself was unfortunately dry and crumbly instead moist.Discarding the Gummies along with all but one bite of the Cake, a follow-up Old Fashioned not faring much better and lacking any tanginess beneath good Maple Frosting, it was from here that praise again began to seem justified with the Crme Brulee offering diversity of textures and flavors without compromising the surrounding Donuts texture one bit.Rounding out the morning with dueling Fritters, the flower-shaped Cherry placing layers of Jam between petals, it was with actually the more traditionally shaped version that would prove best thanks to a plethora of Apples and Cinnamon surrounded by soft Dough shellacked in Glaze that manages to penetrate deep without becoming soggy. endoedibles.com
