Opened in Uptown around the beginning of 2013 Burch Steak and Pizza Bar seems to suffer from an identity crisis at first glance, the upstairs menu offering Prime Meats, Shellfish and Salads while downstairs take on Wood-fired Pies and Brunch trends more traditional American Fare rooted in French technique.Owned by 112 Eaterys Isaac Becker and currently toqued by Executive Chef Ben Pichler, a back entrance off Colfax Avenue at first deceiving as tall windows look out towards Hennepin, it is immediately upon entry to what appears like a former warehouse that guests are greeted by two hostesses, confirmed reservations led to tables in one of two rooms with the first kitchen-facing and second bathed in light.Popular amongst locals and apparently celebrities as well, Musician Sting arriving but barely recognized around an hour in, it is from a brief menu including no Pizzas and three styles of Steak and Eggs that diners are left to choose on Sunday at ten, the fact that Pastries are made on-site a nice touch though the lack of the Dessert table featured at night is unfortunate.High ceilinged with volume to match, the combination of music and table-talk both notable even with the sizable space less than 1/8 full, it was after perusing choices thrice that an order was crafted, an Almond Croissant and Griddled Biscuit arriving nearly twenty minutes later most certainly worth waiting for as the first was immensely flaky and loaded with unsweetened Almond Butter instead of Frangipane while the golden round featured buttery layers that separated as though laminated and paired well to house Jam and Butter from a nearby farm.Passing on hot Coffee as the sun had already warmed the room thoroughly, a roomy seat along the window magnifying this effect, it was shortly after Pastry plates were collected that Brunch marched on to Entrees and a la carte additions, the Meat Dumpling offered alongside several others at dinner unfortunately compromised by doughy Pasta and only really noteworthy for the Saffron while French Toast made from Custard-wetted Baba fared far better thanks to both the texture and top quality Syrup plus stewed Strawberries and Cream lightly tinged in Black Pepper. endoedibles.com

2016: We sat in the basement- more low key. Pizza was good but not great. Steak was good but pricey. Expected to be wow’d but wasn’t. At least they had valet.2019: Went back and sat upstairs. Excellent service. Good cocktail menu, loved the types of dumplings we tried, pizza was still good but not wow, burger was not good- it comes with a ton of purple cabbage in a sauce that made the bun soggy.

2 out of 3 ain’t bad. I love Bar La Grassa, as well as 112 Eatery so was eager to try the 3rd installment in Isaac Becker’s trifecta. Unfortunately, I could not have been more disappointed. Really wanted a great panzanella salad and was served perhaps the worst dish I’ve had all year. It was cold, slimy and acrid tasting. Nothing else was really memorable – a few lonely scallops on a tray, a pizza with a limp crust, and ho-hum wine and cocktails. The worst part was how disparate everything was. Nothing connected to anything else. The icing on the cake was thinking the 25 cent dessert would be some sort of fun bargain until it arrived and I realized this was a tiny piece of penny candy that should have come gratis with the check – in fact that is what they do at BLG.

Excellent dinner – 10th Feb. Dinner downstairs in the pizza restaurant. Had the crab dumpling – bit like pasta sheets – with basil and lime. Very tasty. For my main the spicy Ahi Tuna pizza – delicious – perfectly cooked pizza and then the tuna added at the end.Excellent moist coconut cake – best I’ve had in a long time. Good, attentive service. Atmosphere in restaurant is ok – seemed to be dinner time for most of the staff around the bar downstairs. Many of the table were empty, restaurant seemed to empty out pretty early for a Sunday night.

Noise drowns out food. I’ve been to many rock concerts in the 60s, and know that it is not a good sign to have your ears ring for 3 days after exposure to the type of noise that booms off of the hard surfaces at Burch. The food seemed decent enough, and the menu had the obligatory pretentiousness of a high-end restaurant (whipped potatoes by any other name still appeal to my Irish heritage). My wife’s tenderloin wasn’t up to the standards of someone raised on Nebraska corn-fed beef, but the extra chewing seemed to distract her from the cacaphony. I’d like to try it again after OSHA mandates some noise reduction. Meanwhile, if you are in the mood for the ‘Burch experience’–I’d recommend D’Amico takeout at the end of an active runway.

My wife and I ate dinner here to celebrate out wedding anniversary. We were both really excited to have this dining experience! Not having known of complaints about sound issues before going, it was not bad although it was a Sunday night. The service was really good. The starters we had were really good (acorn squash/crab soup, oysters, lamb strog dumplings). The house speciality drinks we ordered were good (manhattan & cosmo). Sadly, my wife’s 6oz wagu sirloin was undercooked and had to be sent back. My 10 oz manhattan wagu steak was cooked to the correct temperature but was way over salted. I finished it but was not pleased + there was a fair amount of gristle. The server indicated over salting was a known kitchen issue with the cooks being over zealous with seasoning at times. In an attempt to make things right, we were comped two desserts. I’d go back for dinner off their entree or pizza menu but will not be ordering another $75 dollar steak from them again, ever. That makes me sad.

I dined at Burch Steak this Saturday with a group of 7 for my mom’s 50th birthday. I love Burch Steak. I had been there about 6 months ago, close to when they opened, and had an average experience. This time they beyond impressed me. Our steaks were beautifully seasoned and cooked perfectly. The semolina dumplings, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, corn and bacon hash, and veal and pork dumpling were all outrageously delicious. The entire table continued to exclaim how delicious our food was. On top of that, the service was great, the restaurant is beautiful, and the small bite desserts for 25 cents each were a fun ending to the meal.
