Gorkha palace is more of a Nepali/Himalayan than Indian restaurant. I went there recently for the Friday lunch buffet. It’s a got a dark reddish interior with a relatively casual setting. The buffet comprised of onion pakoras, a tomato chutney, chili pickle, naan, three types of rice, a potato-cucumber curry, cauliflower and peas, jackfruit curry, spinach chicken, goan prawns in coconut milk, daal and a watermelon-pineaple salad. The food was rather different from the usual Minneapolis Indian restaurants. The owner informed me that all ingredients sourced were organic, perhaps that’s why the veg seemed fresher. The potatos and pakoras were the best of the lot. The prawns were well spiced and flavored but were betrayed by the heaviness of tinned coconut cream. The chicken tasted good but could do with more flavor. The naan was soft but underbaked for my taste, I generally like a few burns on my naan. The cauliflower was al-dente which was pleasantly surprising and the daal was good with the rice and the chili pickle. The meal overall was crying out for a citric intervention and maybe some raw onions on the side. At about 17-19 bucks a head, this Indian buffet is somewhat steeply priced, especially in the absence of a proper dessert. Overall I’d say the place deserved a 3.5-3.75. A bit of plain yogurt, a few slices of lemon and maybe baby onions pickled in vinegar could make a world of a difference. potsoup.wordpress.com
