Our visit was on a Saturday evening, only a short wait. Waitstaff attentive and prompt, our food was out promptly. I’d ordered the Fish and Chips, it was good but the tarter sauce was different from any other I’ve had, I really liked it. The fries were not hot, they had to have been setting for some time. My wife had the Swedish Meatballs, she said they were good. She’s not one compliment or complain.
It is, quite literally, your stereotypical cafe on the corner that serves really good food at a decent price. I had their biscuits and gravy with eggs and hashbrowns, and you could just tell that everything was scratch. Hashbrowns were some of the best I’ve ever had, the biscuits were oddly shaped (a hallmark of scratch cooking), and the sausage they use in their gravy, where ever they source it from, gives the gravy an interesting note of cloves.I was going to give this place a 3.0, however after figuring out the reason for the initially low mark, I feel as though now I must address the 900 pound gorilla in the room with regard to many of the other reviews of this establishment. Many of the reviews here cite the lack of attention or warmth of the waitstaff, and it started off that way with me as well, as I was seated, then forgotten about for a good 10 minutes or so before I finally grabbed the attention of Heather, one of the waitstaff. She apologized and explained that she thought perhaps her colleague in the section next to her picked me up, which wasn’t the case. The waitstaff were running roughshod trying their best to accommodate every high maintenance hipster in the place, subbing this, adding that, asking more questions about the bread they use than a Supreme Court justice nominee gets from Congress. So, I say, go, try the food at breakfast, just cut the waitstaff a break….if it takes them a little longer to get to you or they don’t spend a ton of time at the table to take your order, it’s not because they have some unspoken vendetta against you…you can probably thank the whiny hipster with the handlebar mustache at the table next to you pitching a fit that the coffee isn’t fair trade.
Two words: hippy cakes! I dream of the sometimes. It’s a great place for brunch. Real comfort food. But expect to wait 45 during peak. BTW Hazels, do you know your door closer is installed backwards? That’s why it doesn’t close in the winter. Note to self- never sit by door.
Crunch time not Brunch time. Brunch implies indulgence. Food containing too much fat and calories that dances among your taste buds; an ambiance vacillating between reading the Sunday Comics and reminiscing about the weekend. Brunch is ones small attempt at staving off the hustle and bustle of the workweek. Hazels located in Northeast Minneapolis has two out of the three. What Hazels lack is the ambiance. No friendly people welcoming you into their very busy restaurant nor a hint of excitement from the wait staff. If anything, one trudges on. Standing at the counter not sure if I should seat myself or wait to be seated and anxiously looking to the buzz of people floating around the hostess area for help. Out of the five busy little bees swarming about, not one welcomed my group to their establishment. Not one lifted their eyes to meet mine in recognition I existed. Not a nod. Not a quick smile. Nothing. One trudges on. Looking nervously among my crowd of people, I signaled an unspoken apology. Somehow, somewhere our name was taken and we accepted to wait for an unknown length of time. My friend in an act of revolution asked one of the drones for this necessary piece of information along with a menu. This was not my idea of indulgence.
Exceptional service, hot food, great variety and all very good! Also a great price and Bloody Marys and Mimosas available!
Great food. Check. Great friendly service despite always being at capacity. Check. Reasonable prices. Check. Great atmosphere. Check. Looking for brunch in minneapolis? Go to hazels. And yes, you should try the drunken French toast. I usually get an order of it for the table to split.
One of my Faves.. My wife and I live very close to Hazel’s and it has become a popular dinner destination for us. The food is delicious and the servers are extremely courteous. I am a huge fan of their burger. I also love that the restaurant is kid friendly. I wouldn’t have thought it would be….but my 1 and a half year old loves the food and the staff are so cool about our little guy….who can sometimes be a handful at restaurants. Also…their brunch on weekends is DELICIOUS! Love this place.
