Another great experience with the Sushi Gods! Crunchy rolls, green tea and great prices at Happy Hour :-)23 May, 2013Gathered with friends from out of town and ordered a sushi roll spread to fit any King of the court. Very tasty rolls and filling amounts. Would certainty return again /-)
Wow!. If I were told that for the rest of my life I would only be able to have food from one cuisine, I would choose Japanese. Obento-ya is the best Japanese restaurant I have ever been to. And their waiter, Arthur, is one of the best too. He is not only friendly and attentive, but very knowledgeable. Whenever we ask him for advice, he is not only able to give us background information we need to choose, but also makes recommendations that are spot-on. We make a point of requesting a table in his serving area whenever he is there.I have never been disappointed in any of the food, the drinks, or the service.
Love their food but beware of random hours!. Obento-ya has great food and yummy sushi (their daily specials are intriguing). I recommend their salads. They are only open from 11:30am-2:30pm and 5:00-9:30/10:30, so unfortunately no wandering in between lunch and dinner hour.
Wow! Amazing food across the board! We couldn’t help ourselves; we got the bento, tumpura udon, gyoza, miso, lobster roll, and winter roll. The favors and textures were perfectly balenced. The prices are spot on- in my own opinion they could charge more but I (and my wallet) apreciate the break. You should definitely try this resultant- and make to to make a reservation.
This is my go to restaurant. We have had a young man wait on us a couple of times and he is always attentive and pleasant. The tempura is hot and tasty and the sushi is the best I have had in town. It is fresh and done simply to highlight the taste of the fish. I get hungry when think of it.
Good foods, but slow service. The food is great, especially with the price range, yet the service is often slow and their hours are very limited. Like their backyard space though.
Good bento and happy hour. This place, as the name would suggest, is less about the sushi and more about the bento. The bento that I had included standards like a burdock root salad, rice with a little umeboshi in it, seaweed salad, and a potato – in this case a little pile of whipped potatoes. The tempura here is reasonable. The black cod was a smaller portion that had a buttery outside and a flaky inside. It was well done.Overall it was a pretty relaxing lunch in a nice backyard patio complete with a little water fountain. The one thing that annoyed us were the restaurant’s neighbors but perhaps that’s because we went on a weekend morning. The neighbors were yelling down at us. The waitress laughed it off and overall gave us great service.Once I went around the happy hour and had a pretty standard warm bottle of sake (nihonshuu) and the bacon/asparagus maki. Salty but savory. The Tsukune (chicken ball) skewers were tasty as well. I have yet to try more of the robata skewers. The sushi that I had – maguro (tuna) and unagi (eel) – was great for a price below that of other places. Overall I’d say that this shop is great for bento at lunch and a light happy hour izakaya-style dinner. It may not be zipping into experimental territory with Japanese food but it does the job right. It reminds me of a mid-range place in one of the Tokyo train stations – only with a nice Minnesota atmosphere. It might be a good idea to budget ahead of time though. I’d recommend it for those Japanese food lovers that don’t want to go to a chic and overpriced sushi place. It’s good for a date with someone that you’re familiar with, not for a first date or show-off sort of date.
