Empire Over-expanded. Wonderful cocktails and great salad. Unfortunately that is where the good stopped. Korean short ribs were flavorful enough, although they could have been spicier. The problems were that it was a ridiculously small portion and hard to chew the meat off of the bone. With anchovies and olives, the Cte d’Azur pizza sounded like it would be an umami bomb, but that wasn’t the case. The entire pie was plastered with what tasted like Contadina tomato paste and no cheese. The olives and anchovies weren’t very exciting and the crust was made with such precision and conformity that it offered little interest or appeal. It also didn’t have much snap. I’m not saying it was soggy, but it wasn’t far off. In addition, I don’t get all the hype about the design of the space. It felt cold and utilitarian and there wasn’t much of visual interest. The pizzas from Lola were better. And while probably not the money maker that Joni is, a venue like Hello Pizza is a more satisfying experience.
Born of Korean heritage and educated at Columbia in English one can fairly assume Chef Ann Kim did not grow up wanting to be a Pizzaiolo, yet ever since opening Pizzeria Lola in 2010 her name has been synonymous with dining in Minneapolis, a follow-up called Hello Pizza built in tribute to all the Slices she devoured while in College and Young Joni the most ambitious project yet.Opened late 2016 as a fine-dining concept in the Northeast, the cavernous wood interior featuring an open kitchen and varied seating options from which a big communal table is available to walk-ins, it was perhaps twenty minutes after Fridays 4:00p opening that the space was found already busy, a brief wait followed by the presentation of Water and a menu divided into sections offering Pizza, Vegetable, Salad, and Other Delights.Rooted in woods fire, leaping flames visible behind the counter while a large copper oven resides in a separate area to the left, Young Jonis Food is currently under the watch of Executive Chef Michael Shaughnessy and although several items competed for attention a rule against half-and-half Pies unfortunately handicaps solo diners tremendously. Not at all stuffy or expensive despite its self-described genre, the severs pleasant and efficient with overall volume lively but not loud, it was after lengthy debate amongst global inspirations that YOLO was ordered in favor of Kims famous Short Ribs, the Crust picking up a good blister and remaining slightly puffy at the center of a modest cornicione while Meat Lovers toppings, Red Sauce and Mozzarella were all the quality one might expect in a single-person $17 Pie.Saving room for one more meal and thus reluctant to delve further into a menu built on share plates, though the server was happy to advise on what might be most appropriate, it was under the assumption that Cookies and Ice Cream can never take up that much stomach space that two Desserts were ordered, the Church Basement Plate a good bargain at just $1 per piece and highlighted by miniature Apple Cobblers while the Soft Serve was so-so and without a lot of difference between flavors. endoedibles.com
Geat space! Wonderful (and strong!) craft cocktails, variety of artisan pizzas, tasty veggie and salad sides. Desserts include a delicious and creamy vanilla bean or espresso ice cream and raspberry bread pudding! There is also a speak-easy type bar accessed via the alley and open when the red lights are lit. Get a reservation well ahead of time or your choices are to eat at 4 or 8pm.
The food wasn’t that much different than Pizzeria Lola, but everything was really good. All of the appetizers we tried were both unique and delicious . We had the One Potato, Two pizza which was solid. The dough was really tasty, and the toppings we’re great as well!
