Worst dining experience in any recent memory. I am so grateful I didn’t select this restaurant to take my friends to; someone else picked it. The service was about as bad as it could get: VERY slow, inept (waitress dropped a soup spoon into the soup, then forgot to bring another one for the guest; brings the bill, no pen, then to top it off forgets to return my credit card. The food was not good. The entrees my companions ordered came late and way over done. The entree I had was passable but not at all worth the amount charged for it. In all, this ranks as one of the worst dining experiences I have had in recent memory. I will NEVER return to that restaurant.

Relaxing Dinner Out. For a relaxing dinner out, my husband and I often choose Lord Essex. It has a comfortable atmosphere where we can talk and never feel rushed. We have always been very pleased with our food and service is excellent. It is definitely one of our favorite restaurants in Rochester!

Exceptional!. We went to Lord Essex for my father-in-law’s birthday and the food was exceptional! The best part of our night was the service we received from Steve. Thank you Lord Essex and Steve for making my father-in-law’s birthday dinner a night to remember!

So Glad It’s Open Again!. It was a special place years ago and luckily the decor hasn’t changed, although the menu has a bit and they’re only open for dinner. I’m such a salad connoisseur & my salad was just perfect – portionwise plus the dressing was wonderful (balsamic vinegar/oil). The pasta was really nice too with a perfectly light, creamy sauce. The main course portions are a bit large, so we didn’t have dessert, although I would have liked some. Steve, our server has got to be one of the best – experienced, knowledgable – an upscale waiter who can make dining in a great place a really lovely & enjoyable experience.

Tonight was my second time eating at Lord Essex. This time I had dinner & once again, the service, atmosphere & quality are awesome. I don’t understand the poor reviews this place gets. Perhaps locals that don’t understand ‘fine dining?’ Seriously, this is the best food I have found – so far – in Rocester: a town full of mediocre & cheap food.22 Sep, 2010Lovely atmosphere and food. The lunch I stumbled into at Lord Essex was the ONLY excellent meal I had during my week-long stay in Rochester as a patient at The Mayo Clinic. I understand that there are a few other decent restaurants in town and I will check them out during my next trip in October, but overall, Rochester is full of mediocre to inedible food, despite what you might read on the Internet. e.g. AVOID PanneKouken (or however you spell it).I went by Internet reviews during my first trip and ended up with several evenings of boring to horrid food. I was lucky to wander in here one day in-between appointments (it is across the street from the Mayo in the Kahler Grand hotel) and the service, food, and atmosphere were better than anywhere else I have so far found in that town.

It’s been around for a long time and you can tell… The food is unique but pricey, everything about it needs to be updated. Not bad but outdated in several ways.

The BAR is interesting, but the menu is the same as the hotel. Wannabe fancy… Hotel quality.
