Complete Disaster. I can not remember the last time I had such poor service as we received at Cherokee Tavern last night. We had a special celebration and planned to have a larger group, so we looked for a venue that claimed they could handle groups of 15-20. Cherokee Tavern advertised a room that could accommodate us, so we made reservations. One member of our group arrived a bit early to find that there was no sign of our reservation. So we began our wait. After an hour we saw open tables large enough to accommodate us but we were told that the kitchen was backed up and could not serve us yet. Also we had been told several times that things were busy that night because of a seafood special but they had run out of two of the items on the special. We then explained that we did not care about the special we just wanted to order off the main menu and that we would like to socialize so asked if we could at least be seated at the open tables and get drinks while we waited for the kitchen. Under duress the staff seated us. Then took our drink orders. Then gave us some bread and butter. We asked for silverware and napkins and where told that they were working on it but it might be a short while. Meanwhile tables are being set up with silverware all around us. Some of our drinks arrive. Appetizers are brought to our table gratis to apologize for the wait. Still no napkins nor silverware. At this time we ask about how long we will need to wait for the kitchen to recover from its troubles. Around us groups nearly a large as us, having been seated after us, are not only awash with silverware and napkins but also salads, drinks, appetizers and main courses. We are told that we still need to wait. We are now over 2 hours into this ordeal. We try to explain that our guest of honor for the evening has another event she is obligated to go to in 45 minutes what seems to be the ETA. Keep in mind others around us are being served. We are informed that it will be at least an hour before we can order. We ask about sandwiches or appetizers and the staff, again under duress from us reluctantly take our orders. We are careful to only order items that a quick to prepare. After another 45 minutes we still have not been given food. I had to leave along with the guest of honor so we could make the next event. It is not unreasonable to think that we should be able to have a meal in 3 hours. This was not the case. Quite frankly we should have all left, demanding that we not be made to pay for our drinks but those who could still stay did and ate. If our treatment is any indication do not expect the Cherokee Tavern to step up to solve any of your problems. They may half-heartedly make motions to do so but they will fail. Be ready to be ignored. Be ready to wait. Be ready to watch others eat. Be ready for others to have napkins.

Ribs and rings! Awesome.. I had the ribs and rings and keep going back for this alone! I’ve been there for dinner in the last 6 months as well and found the wait staff to be attentive and friendly. The dinner salad could use to be bigger but that’s probably me liking a big salad. I’d gone there 15 years ago and the steak was just as good if not better than 15 years ago.Service: A Ambiance: A+Wine list: B+food: AOverall: A

A Neighborhood Gem. Cherokee Tavern does not have the full menu that made its predecessor outstanding for so many years, but it still fills the bill for a nice old fashioned restaurant with several proven recipes that have stood the test of time. They also introduced some excellent scheduled nightly specials that help keep the dinner tab down while still allowing a very nice meal. Steak is Cherokee’s best, but they also offer several excellent salmon and walleye as well as several tasty burger/sandwich meals. Hopefully, the Cherokee will continue to re-introduce more of their former standards and some adventurous new entrees. Its still the place to go in West St. Paul.

Go for the Fiery West Side Burger. While it’s in our neighborhood, we never visited when it was still the Sirloin Room. When they changed it to the Tavern, reportedly modified the menu a bit, and started displaying good craft beer logos on the door, we paid a visit. This place has great burgers, a few nice salads, and terrific desserts, in addition to an attractive beer menu. There are a few TVs there, for sports event watching. Sadly, they were unable to find the Stanley Cup playoff game that we were looking for.

Surf and turf. I had the steak fondue served with a mushroom and hollandaise sauce. Steak pieces were way overdone and very hard to chew and swallow. Also had the orange roughy stuffed with Parmesan and crab. Fish was nicely cooked, but stuffing overpowered the fish. Steaks were cooked to order perfectly. Bread served at the table was excellent.
