After trying a few more dishes here I am slightly adjusting my overall rating. There are a few dishes here thst really hit–like the soups, sesame chivken, hot and spicy chicken, pad thai–and a number of things thst don’t work for me–cream cheese wontons, fried rice (has some odd spice that turns me off), sweet & sour chicken low on flavor, Beef Phoenix falls into the gloppy cornstarch category.). Still a very good place to pick out favorites from however. — EDIT —Another addition to the growing number of really good Asian/Vietnamese/Thai restaurants in the NorthEastern Metro. We sampled deliciously crispy egg rolls, spring rolls perfectly stuffed with fresh veg, BBQ pork and dipped in a peanut sauce that was packed with peanut flavor w/o getting sweet. Steamed pot stickers were probably a one time buy for me–filling was very dense and wrappers were a bit chewy. Also on the negative side were the too-sweet cream cheese puffs. Am I alone on this one? Brand Name Cream cheese inside a wrapper and fry–you don’t need to add sugar. Anyway…Sesame Chicken is like everyone said–incredibly crunchy inspite of the sauce which is a bit sweeter than others but with a notable citrus flavor (orange?) that was very welcome! Pad Thai didn’t taste like any I’ve had before but was very good in it’s own right (this is not a Thai place after all…) Hot & Spicy Chicken waa a very good rendition, but again sweeter than I am used to, owing heavily to the Hoisin sauce I think was in the preperation. Pho was good but very mild on the heat and needed a bit of soy sauce to pump up the flavors. A jumbo bowl large enough to bathe in was light on the beef/chicken I thought. All in all a top notch Vietnamese place I would readily recommend–especially in the world of Maplewood where it seems all you can find are chain restaurants on every corner and in between.
