I ordered the catfish po-boy with fries for a to go lunch. I’ve been twice before, and both times the food was so-so. Today was no different. Despite having a nice crunch on the ends, the catfish batter was lacking in seasoning, and the tartar sauce did little to enhance the flavor. For $13.56, I expected more. If going by food alone, my rating would be lower, but it is a great place to get a drink and hear live music, not to mention the White brothers have done so much to promote Jackson. Go for a drink, but don’t expect to be thrilled by the food.
The good and bad. Took in lunch with some friends today at Hal & Mal’s and was really looking forward to it having been probably 15 years since I had been there. The hamburger steak lunch plate caught my eye when I walked in, but to our entire table’s disappointment they were out. I understand running out of a blue plate, but not at 12:15 PM when the place isn’t packed. Not sure who dropped the ball there but they did….I ended up with the soup and salad. I had a cup of their seasonal Pumpkin and Andoullie soup with a side salad with their house made tarragon vinaigrette. The soup was really good and very unique, enjoyed it. It’s not a dish I would want often but it was amazing for a change. Salad was fresh and the dressing was very nice. In all I enjoyed what I had, but was very disappointed that they ran out of the blue plate so early in lunch service.
Meh. I really hate it when a popular local place doesn’t live up to its reputation. I went here for lunch and ordered a crawfish po-boy while my girlfriend ordered a catfish po-boy. I couldn’t tell you if the crawfish were seasoned because all I could taste was mayonnaise. My girlfriend’s catfish was bland, as if they dipped it in unseasoned bread crumbs before frying it. On top of that, the floor was very dirty and the men’s restroom was out of paper towels. This is from the most recent time I’ve been to Hal & Mal’s, and while it is a great place to have a drink, the food has never really impressed me. You’d think for the price it would be better.
What A Cool Place. This was a recommendation from a fellow road warrior. The structure appears to be an old factory, wood floors with lots of ambiance, I’d call it a complex. We decided to eat at the bar, and I wrangled a seat directly in front of the beer taps. Lots of local as well as new beers, I started with a Timber Beast and an order of Fried Pickles. The menu is varied but being in the Gulf region called for a traditional Gulf meal. I ordered the Grilled Cheese and the Crawfish & Andouille Sausage soup……Wow what a great soup, the Crawfish was light and tasty and the Andouille Sausage was perfectly seasoned.Apparently there’s lots of local music…..this evening it was Jason Turner and his music and lyrics made for a perfect backdrop for Hal & Mal’s.If you’re in Jackson looking for a nice place with great food, stop by you won’t be disappointed. fricksworld.blogspot.com
Went there for lunch. The nachos were ice cold when they hit the table and the andoullie po-boy had so much brown mustard on it that’s all I could taste, that and the stale bread that is.
Not worth the price!. My wife and I wnt there for lunch and were very disappointed. She got the Reuben which came with just two thin slices of corned beef the barely covered the bread. I can and do make a better sandwich in my own kitchen. For $9, you’d expect a thick deli sandwich piled high with meat and at least a side of chips. I got a half order of red beans ($6), which were, at best, just okay. The rice was uncooked.Service was disappointing as well. The waitress was unattentive and unapologetic when my wife’s meal had to be sent back (she ordered it without cheese and without sauce). We paid $38 for a sanwich and a bowl of beans. What a ripoff!I would go back for the tamales, which were delicious.
It is a great place for lunch. Good food and good service. Just a bit pricey but still reasonable.
