Scales for rating restaurants often end up comparing apples with acorns. Of those listed higher than Anchuca on this list, only ROCA can be considered fine dining, which Anchuca also is; but in September 2017 ROCA is in the process of moving into new quarters and I am not sure when it may reopen. The Anthony is now located in ROCA’s old space, and gives Anchuca a run for its money as to which is currently Vicksburg’s finest restaurant. Anchuca has the advantage of being quieter. Because it is smaller, it feels more intimate and cozier. It is elegant as only a fine antebellum mansion can be. White tablecloths, silver, and fresh flowers. The Anthony’s style is slick and new. If you eat out frequently in Vicksburg, you will get to know the smaller wait staff sooner. Service is friendly and competent in both places, but neither wait staff has the training and polish of a big city famous restaurant. The chef at Anchuca has always been accommodating about dietary issues and will let you know if it is possible, for instance, to prepare a dish that is gluten-free. When I order the melt-in-your mouth filet, I usually ask for it plain, without the rather sweet topping that comes standard. Never a problem. Coffee comes flavored with cinnamon. I ask for it plain. Never a problem.I’ve never had a dish at Anchuca I didn’t enjoy quite a bit. I usually order the asparagus bisque or the gumbo and the filet or shrimp Creole. All the desserts are excellent. I enjoy the sorbet du jour most often, which I believe has fewer calories than the others. The pies are always delicious, especially a la mode. There’s a small but adequate bar and a pleasant wine list or wine by the glass.Dinner and weekend brunch. Closed some evenings early in the week. Check the web site or call. It’s best to make reservations, because you never know when a large party will rent the whole place, as happens occasionally.

Enjoyed one of the very best meals that I’ve had in years. I dine in some of the best restaurants in CA and NY. Sitting out on the patio in the first week of April 2017, my wife and I enjoyed one of the best Manhattans, ever. We followed that with an outstanding meal of huge, tender, sweet Gulf Shrimp with fantastic cheese grits. The grits were better than any polenta that I’ve ever had. On our next trip to the Gulf we plan on spending the night at the beautiful Anchuca Mansion. You can’t go wrong with this gem.
