First Time Visit. I have lived here in St. Joseph all my life, and today was the first time I have ever been to Betty’s Cafe. I arrived about 10:00am and to my surprise the restaurant was full. I figured by that time most of the breakfast crowd had left. I seated myself and was promptly greeted by a nice waitress. She took my order (small Biscuits and Gravy with a hard egg and slice of sausage). It took about 20 minutes for that simple order to arrive and the food was just average to me. I guess I expected more flavor from the sausage gravy with the reputation that Betty’s has of being home cooked food. The worst part of my dining experience was the smoke. I am a non smoker and usually I can tolerate being in a smoke allowed restaurant, but when the gentleman across from me had his cigarette smoke blowing in my general direction it was the worst part of my dining experience. I noticed on the wall they had Stuffed Green Peppers for their lunch special and I was sorry I didnt wait an hour and come at 11:00am for that meal. Betty’s is a nice place, I think the friendly servers was the highlight of my visit.
