We tried Dickey’s for the first time today. Being from Kansas City I tend to be critical of the barbecue places that I go to, but I was impressed by this place. I had the pulled pork Big Barbecue sandwich and my friend had the brisket sandwich. The pork had a soggy-like texture and lacked flavor. However, the brisket was delicious and had a great meaty flavor with big chunks and crispy edges. The bun was perfect, slightly crispy around the edge and soft, warm and buttery in the middle. I usually like a sweet sauce over a spicy one, but I felt Dickeys sweet sauce was almost too sweet for me. The Original was unremarkable. That spicy sauce, though was really tasty!! My only wish is that it were thicker. The baked beans were on point and you could tell the fried okra was fresh when you bit into it because it had a nice green color and tasted like okra, not oil like some places. It’s some of the best fried okra that I’ve ever had. The Blondie Brownie was slightly warmed, super soft on the inside and extra chocolatey. Plus, FREE ice cream! I will definitely be back…but not ordering the pulled pork again. Overall it is a nice, clean place and the staff was friendly.
Very Good for a Chain. Dickey’s is a decent sized fast food chain that specializes in Texas style barbeque. Which makes it someone unique in that it’s good for a southern based chain. Despite beef usually being king in Texas barbeque, Dickey’s has very good pulled pork and polish sausage, decent cheddar sausage, good ribs, and decent brisket. What you really want though is the daily specials, in particular Wednesday during which they take generous portions of their two best meats and put them on a big toasted roll along with cheese and, if you want, onions and pickles. It’s easily some of the best fast food in Columbia.
