I love Flat Branch. They serve some of my favorite dinner items and the beer is wonderful. Im perplexed by my most recent brunch visit. The coffee was the only redeeming item. Are frozen waffles an actual menu item or did something just go horribly wrong?
Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to give zero stars.Avoid Flatbranch if you don’t want to be harassed about your private conversation. On Thursday May 31 my pastor and I had lunch at Flatbranch, something we had done six times previously, meeting every few months to discuss a variety of topics. As I have done in the past, I made an outline of topics I wished to discuss. These topics included church business and items of a political nature. Apparently, on the way out, I accidentally dropped this outline in the parking lot where it came into that hands of Flatbranch employee, Matthew Arnall. Somehow, with only the first names of myself, my pastor, and another church employee plus the church initials, Mr. Arnall determined the name of my church and pastor. The next day, June 1, Mr. Arnall began to repeatedly call the church, angrily demanding to speak to the pastor, who was not at the church at the time, claiming that the items on my outline proved the pastor was preaching a political agenda constituting violation of separation of Church and State, and that he was going to have the IRS tax exemption of the church revoked! These calls so alarmed the female church employees that he spoke with that they locked the doors to the church. Mr. Arnall then came to the church and when he was unable to enter started calling again. The church sexton then came out and spoke to him. Finally he left. When the pastor learned of this outrageous behavior he went to Flatbranch to complain to the management. He learned, much to his surprise, that the employee in question was a manager himself. The pastor tried and failed to convince Mr. Arnall that stalking his customers was inappropriate behavior. Out of concern for the safety of his staff, he asked Mr. Arnall not to come onto the church property again. An hour or so later, when I learned of these incidents, I went to Flatbranch to speak to the owner,Tom Smith, but he was said to be unavailable. Instead, I spoke with Paul Huesgen, who represented himself as the manager on duty at the time. I stated very emphatically that Mr. Smith needed to speak to us, and that I couldn’t see how Mr. Arnall’s egregious actions were compatible with continued employment. The next day, June 1, I received a phone call which I didn’t take, but a name and number appeared on caller ID. I tried to call the number but got a FAX tone. I then looked on Facebook and found that the name that appeared on caller ID had a presence there and appeared to be a supporter, if not a member, of an extremest group. This individual states on Facebook that his new hobby is handguns. One can only speculate about the reason for that call. All of this was reported to Columbia Police by both my pastor and myself. This was four weeks ago and neither my pastor nor myself have heard anything from Mr. Smith. Perhaps he thinks he can run out the clock on this but he is wrong. Mr. Smith, you now own the actions of Mr. Arnall. By your silence I can only assume his behavior is acceptable to the ownership of Flatbranch Pub and Brewing. I would advise all who believe in freedom of speech and religion, rights guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U. S. Constitution, to avoid patronizing Flatbranch.
