Dr. Death Does Dinner. I have found Glenns, in its various incarnations, to be both interesting and tastysince my first encounter in 1984. For nodiscernable reason, I have apparently been pointlessly delaying review of thecurrent version (29 S. 8th St.). The staff, and in particular the servers, are consistently both excellent and unobtrusive.Glenns is one of very few places where the Doctor begins with a cocktail rather thanbeer or wine. This is because the housespecialty drinks are both interesting and tasty. Recently I have favored the pear basilmartini; pear vodka garnished with a fresh basil leaf, and redolent of unexpectedpeppery notes. Have several! Each of the drinks on the list is bothunusual and worth a try. Among the list of starters, the quinoa & black bean fritters areoutstanding! Tasty enough to eat by themselves, they are nevertheless served with an excellent slightly spicy dippingsauce. While not quite reaching the touch-stone level of the legendary house salad atCunettos House of Pasta on the hill in STL, the salads at Glenns arenevertheless both large and excellent. Ihave recently favored the Bleu Cheese Salad which is served with enough bleugoat cheese, along with toasted pecans, and is dressed with a balsamicreduction. On this particular visit mypartner had the seasonal berry salad, which appeared to be the same mixed fieldgreens plus blueberries and red raspberries, and which was judged to beexcellent. For the last several visits I have had the fried gulf oysters as an entre, and theyare large, tasty, and not over-breaded.My partner had the daily special, which was blackened prime rib, andwhich was rated as, wonderful! Thelist of entre-accompanying side-dishes seems a bit limited (Why is there nocoleslaw?). Both of us had the freshasparagus, which was very good, and I additionally had the shockingly toothsomefried okra.Despite being too full for dessert, we felt obligated to share the bread pudding with whiskeysauce. And, Chantilly cream! Which is simply Creole/French for whippedcream. L It was, as always, excellent despite beingmuch too heavy for a dessert.Considering how unrealistically high the Doctors standards are, there must surely besomething besides the lack of coleslaw to complain about? Wellthere are almost always too manydiners, and considering the complete lack of anything sound-deadening it cansometimes be a bit loud. Perhaps the newoutdoor sidewalk-seating area is the answer to this problem? Aconsistent Columbia fave; 4.8/5.

It seems that patron service is the part they forgot to teach when they opened this place. After an hour wait for our food, and no attention from the wait staff, I asked another server to check on our food. Sure enough, it magically arrived, half-cold, half boiling hot, to our table with great apologies. Better were the excuses; something about the chef walking out. But that doesn’t answer why others seated after got their meals before us. Our mediocre drinks were comped, and our seemingly tipsy server promised us a visit by the manager. And the food? Not thrilling. Average at best. Upon exit, my daughter thanked the manager at the door, for our drinks, and he looked at her quizzically. And as she explained our server’s behavior, he dismissed her shortly, and acted like we were crazy. Oddest dining experience ever. We won’t be back.

Glenn’s Cafe – New Location Next to Tiger Hotel. Like pretty much everything else associated with the Tiger Hotel’s management philosophy at this date, Glenn’s Cafe suffers from the should have been betters. The food was fine, but… for the price it should have been better. Every dish we had was overseasoned. The service was fine, but… it should have been better. Glasses were empty, meals sat half finished, and we had to ask repeatedly for our check. If you want better food at a comparable price point, hit Sycamore’s. If you want comparable food at a cheaper price point, hit Addison’s or Flat Branch. My biggest complaint is that they somehow managed to mess up the one uncategorically good thing I associate with the Tiger Hotel. The Dirty Money is an excellent drink, usually, but… apparently the Vault didn’t share the right recipe.
