Mixed Bag but Ultimately Good. Let me firmly establish a rule about going to Schnucks Deli:You want to try the sandwiches, you want to try the fried chicken. Everything else is in the hot food case is a matter of precision timing, they don’t move the side orders that quickly so there’s a high risk of them being dried out when you do purchase them. The chips they make in Schnucks are poorly prepared, and the pizza is hit or miss. While they have access to good toppings, the sauce and crust are in horrible condition. Worst of all, the pizza often falls victim to poor preparation. If one of the managers is there then this shouldn’t be a problem but a couple of the people who prepare pizzas never quite grasped the concept of restraint and may add too much sauce and cheese for that sort of crust. One more warning is that the roasted chickens have dramatically dropped in quality recently. They are often dry. However i mentioned sandwiches earlier, and now i’m going to mention them again. SANDWICHES. Good sandwiches. The BLT, Cattleman’s roast beef, and muffuletta are very good, and the quality of the Schnucks deli meats is bar none the best you’ll get out of any of the local grocery stores. Most of the sandwiches i recommend, though word of warning: when asking for the Italian panini: Do not let them toast the salami. Good quality salami like that does not take well to heat. Have them add it after the sandwich has been pressed. One more thing worth noting is fried chicken. Again, the best available in any grocery store. You can easily make lunch for two days by buying a four piece of fried chicken, a loaf of bread and some of the flavored mayo in the deli (I recommend garlic for the regular and chipotle for the spicy fried chicken) and just make sandwiches out of that. Well worth the price.
