As soon as we walked into the Upper Crust, we had a bad feeling about it. The place is very cheesy and poorly decorated. They seemed to be very understaffed. Only 2 cashiers/waitresses and one lonely chef. We noticed his orders were already backed up, even though the restaurant was about half full. We decided to go against our gut and order anyway. The coffee bar was poorly stocked and they only have disposable cups of creamer. The coffee was decent but nothing special. We waited for 30 minutes as we watched the staff struggle with orders and stand around and waste a lot of time. We noticed plates coming back to the kitchen. Also, there is no way for waitresses to know where to take food orders, so they would walk around until they happened upon a person who ordered what was in their hands. Being in a rush, we decided to see if they had started our order so we could get a refund and leave. When my husband went to politely speak to the cashier, she was rude and unapologetic. In the next 5 minutes she brought our food and finally apologized. I had the Lox and Bagel, which was a mistake. The bagel was dry and old. I had about a half of an onion on it with some sad capers. The smoked salmon was decent but overall the dish made me very sad for the establishment. My husbands breakfast burrito was good however. It was the best part our experience. We will never go back.

Meh. The Food: While I cannot attest to the non-dessert food, my experience with Upper Crust’s desserts has been mixed. The first time I came here with my wife, we both had dessert bars (a magic bar and a lemon bar), and while not exceptional, they were good. On the second visit, we had kahlua velvet and italian cream mini cakes. Both were dry and lacked flavor beyond bland sweetness. They reminded me of something I would get from a grocery bakery counter. The Service and Environment: My wife and I received good service both times we visited, but the environment definitely leaves something to be desired. The whole place looks pretty tired and the haphazardly arranged dessert case does not help.Bottom line: Unfortunately, Upper Crust is yet another mediocre addition to Columbia’s paltry baked sweets scene. If you go, don’t expect anything more than what you would get from the HyVee bakery.

Baking down hill. I bought a cinnamon roll and a loaf of sourdough bread on a Sunday afternoon. The cinnamon roll was crunchy all the way through. The sourdough bread was dense, under-baked, with an unappealing apple cider vinegar flavor. Prices were not posted on the pastries and desserts.

Not as good. It used to be a great little place to get a really good, fast, freshly made meal. The food quality is not nearly as good as it used to be and the service is poor. On weekends, don’t bother anymore. If you go there for brunch, you’ll need to ask what it is they have that IS available on the menu. They are usually out of everything. Sad that it is no longer the same.

Service was quite good, food was above par, and desserts were so delectable they had to be eaten first! At first I was timid to visit this location because the fancy encore desserts are only served at the Elm St location. However, we will be back again!

Every time i go in I’m ignored by the service staff, orders take forever, and the food isn’t the quality it once was.
