Chicken shawarma platter with Greek salad, hummus with warm pita and hot sauce is the way to go! Yum! I’ve had the gyros before, but prefer the spices/flavor of the shawarma! The baklava is pretty good too.

Less than meh. Used to love the place, haven’t been here in about 4 months, but tonite, it truly sucked. Got the gyro platter to go, got home, the hot sauce was the same, but nothing else was. The gyro meat was like a bad meatloaf at a horrible greek pot luck, the hummus….worse. Tasted like canned garbanzos ground up with—nothing else. absolutely awful. God, I used to send people by the droves to this place, but no mas. Joe of the Storm variety was apparently no longer there, as was a number of the women in burkahs who used to frequent the kitchen there. I dunno, hope it was just a bad night, but they definitely seemed settled into a well-oiled routine. SMH…

Delicious Dolmas. I finally made it to Papu’s! Unfortunately, although the atmosphere was appealing, the food was just so-so.The interior was clean and bright. The people with whom I interacted (order taker, cook, and cashier) were friendly and welcoming. There was a bit of a wait after placing my order, but that did not concern me as my food was being freshly prepared during this time. There were several current magazines to peruse at the counter while I waited. Once my order was ready, I carried it out to the back patio, which is surprisingly pleasant considering it’s the backside of a gas station. There were lots of green plants and a number of flowers. Metal patio furniture provided ample space for customer seating, almost all of which was in the shade. There was more noise from 75th Street than there was from the station’s activity. Really, an ideal little spot for lunch. The falafel was nothing special. I had actually been looking forward to the garlic sauce I’ve read about; the novelty of a sauce other than tzaziki (which I love) intrigued me. In the event the sauce (which seemed to me like tahini) really could have used more garlic; it left me craving tzaziki. I did not like the tabouli salad. The parsley was the curly leaf variety, which needs to be finely chopped to prevent it from biting back. It was not finely chopped, which lead to an unpleasant mouth sensation. There was also barely any bulghur in it–perhaps this is a regional nuance or they were just low on bulghur. Either way, it could have used about five times as much grain. The seasoning was light…almost too light. I do appreciate that they did not skimp on the lemon. Tabouli should be lemony. There was not nearly as much of the salad as I expected for $4.49. Instead, a small scoop was placed on a bed of romaine. It seemed to me the tabouli was more of an accoutrement to the romaine as opposed to vice versa. But let’s talk about the dolmas. They were without a doubt some of the best I’ve had. Great seasoning, nice texture. They were served with a tablespoon of feta and three kalamatas. I tried a bite of dolma with feta and found the combination to be very appealing. My only complaint is the sauce they drizzle over them. The sauce is a bit sweet, which is distracting from the flavor of the dolmas proper. It doesn’t match. Regardless, the dolmas are delicious and worth a return trip.I will return to give the falafel another try. Perhaps it was just an off day. I would also like to try the baba ganoush sandwich. And more of those dolmas.
