TheAngryEater was excited to find out about Small Batch before heading off to St Louis for a week. It had everything TheAngryEater looks for in a restaurant: freshly made food, prepared on the premises, including bread daily and house-made pasta. On top of that, it was within walking distance of TheAngryEater’s hotel, so dinner was planned. One of us ordered the risotto of the day (primavera risotto), the other a quinoa special (lemon quinoa). The risotto was a bit drier than it should have been, but having made risotto for years, TheAngryEater knows that can happen quite easily. Otherwise it had a nice assortment of fresh spring vegetables including peas, carrot ribbons, small bits of broccoli, and a good amount of Pecorino Romano to add a lot of flavor. Overall, this was a very good dish, nicely presented. The lemon quinoa, however, had a bit too much lemon zest, rendering it slightly bitter, but even so it too had a nice array of vegetables that were different from those used in the risotto including nice bits of asparagus. Even with the bitterness, this dish was good, although neither of use would have ordered it again. One complaint is that Small Batch does not have salt and pepper at the table. TheAngryEater never understands this apparently new trend. To TheAngryEater it seems quite presumptuous to think the chef can season every dish to every diner’s palette. Another complaint is that we were never served bread. After advertising this on their menu, you think that they would serve it with the meal, but no, they did not.Grrr,TheAngryEater
