Quality, but way overpriced. I work in the River Market area and have fallen prey to this place many times. There’s no doubt that the quality of their product is very good. But there are several places in KC where you can get excellent bread and pastries for MUCH less money, at the same level of quality. The people who own this place boast that their croissants, for example, are just what you’d find in Paris. Having had Parisian pastries myself, I would agree that those found at Bloom are definitely close to the real thing. However, NO ONE should pay $5 or $6 for a simple pastry. Other places in KC, such as Le Monde Bakery, have equally delicious pastries at half the cost. Also, many times I’ve found Bloom’s croissant products to be extremely greasy–unlike what you’d find in Paris or at Le Monde here in town. (Side note: they will offer to warm their products up in their microwave, not toasted like it should be–do NOT let them prepare it that way for you or it will be extra greasy and limp). Similarly, while their loaves of bread are fair, they are mostly hard crust with air in the middle. The bread isn’t even comparable to the dense, hearty bread you will find at KC gems such as Fervere. All in all, Bloom serves a fair product–but at a completely unfair price considering what you get. Look elsewhere!

The Food is good, but the prices are outrageous. The food here is good, from the French macarons to the bread, I respect the desire to use good quality ingredients. However, there are quite a few good places that manage to use those ingredients without charging the crazy high prices.

$12 Bread?? Is it made of gold??. I am not a local and pass through KC once every two years for work. So I have been to this bakery twice, each time picking up a loaf of the brioche, which is very tasty. The bakery is small but clean. It can get very crowded in there! The ladies running the register were polite and friendly both times that I visited. During a rush it’s true they’ll be less attentive to you, but hey, they gotta do their work 🙂 The reason I am giving three stars is solely because of the price of the brioche. TWELVE DOLLARS FOR A LOAF OF BREAD. You have GOT to be kidding me. I don’t recall the price of the first loaf I bought two years ago. But this Friday 9/12/14 the price of the loaf I bought, one of the last on the shelf right before closing time, was $12. I’d really like to know WHY. Unless the sugar is from the deepest rainforests, the eggs are from pheasants, and the milk/butter is from Hindu cows, I don’t see how 3x market value is justified at all. Yes, it takes time and effort to make bread from scratch and by hand. But I travel for a living. I’ve been to MANY privately-owned bakeries across America, and I can tell you right now that the average price of a handmade loaf of bread is between $5-$7. What makes your bread so pricey, Bloom Baking Co? Is there gold leaf in the flour? Everything I’ve eaten from this bakery has tasted very good, but I’m sorry to say this isn’t a Michelin-rated bakery where $12 bread is justified. If I return in another two years and the price of bread is more than $7 you can bet they’ll never see my business again.

Buyer beware. Nothing really special about the items sold there and shamefully overpriced.

Massively overpriced. Food is decent, but prepare to get gouged. 200% to 300% markup on retail items (products they purchase to sell).Granted, I didn’t purchase much…still having sticker shock.

Amazing bakery!. I come from a family that bakes everything, and Bloom Baking Co beats everything I’ve ever tasted! I’ve had their croissants which are delicious, and their Reuben is the best damn one I’ve ever had. The owner, who sits outside with samples, even got me hooked on their bread pudding which is something I never would have tried without a sample. Def worth a try and I will always return to this place!
