Enchilada Casera. The food and the service was mediocre. The strawberry margarita wasn’t their signature drink. I wouldn’t recommend this establishment to a friend.
Fantastic Margaritas. The best thing about this restaurant are their margaritas. I have had margaritas all over Kansas City, and this place makes the best by far. My husband doesn’t drink much, and I had him try my margarita, and he ordered himself one right away. The service was good, and the building is in a cool area surrounded by other Mexican restaurants. The downside is that my food was bland. I ordered the taquitos, and I had to add pretty much everything on the table, including spicy salsa, to give it some flavor. I should note that I don’t like anything spicy. They were also dripping with grease. My husband ordered a burrito, and he thought it was perfect. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. I would go back, for the margaritas if nothing else!
No!. This place is horrible. Came to the blvd to go to Rico’s Taco’s Lupe and it was closed so we went next door (La Fonda). It doesn’t sit well with me when a Mexican Restaurant wants to charge me for chips. It’s so non-traiditional. Food is sub par. Staff is very friendly, but very slow. I thought I was going to a quick dinner and it took like over an hour! Ya right- Never coming here again.
Best Mexican in KC. I have been going to La Fonda since they were on 39th Street by KU Med (late 80s).Great alternative to other places on the Boulevard where everything is drenched in melted cheese and lettuce. While they have some special items, most of the menu is standard Mexican. The preparation and flavors are what set it apart. My favorites include their pork burritos, tamales and quesadillas. Chips are crispy and fresh and they have a nice salsa bar.I also love the atmosphere. Half bar, half restaurant, very open, loft-like interior. Has a real neighborhood feel and I have seen the same faces for years. I *love* Mexican and La Fonda is my all-time favorite.
Cure-all soup!. I’ve always been a fan of this restaurant. When you walk in, though it might be empty at first, it’s normally one of the family that greets you and invites you to a table. Though I’ve never been disappointed by much on their menu, my absolute favorite La Fonda dish is their chicken soup. It has a broth base with hearty pulled chicken, rice, avocado, lime, cilantro, onion, and tortillas on the side. I recommend adding some of the salsa from their salsa bar. I get this soup whenever I’m sick, hungover, or just plain hungry for great food! The only downside is, whenever I’ve ordered food to go they occasionally forget a side of guacamole or sauces.
Perlopsych. In my many years on this earth, I have never eaten better rice.
Some of the best mexican in all of KC. Service could be better, but the food is outstanding
