Huff and puff and…just eat here already. Not every meal needs to be elegant. Sometimes when I dine I’d rather avoid the frilly, pretentious, overpriced and often overhyped ‘fine dining’ experience. And then, of course, there’s the intrinsic, inescapable, elemental human condition that demands we devour all conceivable manner of meaty and/or fried fare. I find that this is most proficiently achieved while at leisure, dropping any facade of elegance. The Brick is the hashhouse embodiment of relaxed; every worn seat cushion, dinged tabletop, and dim corner holds a thousand stories and all of them are told in the language of the carefree. Unorthodox decor and a revolving door of performers and events makes this a home to all. You just woke up, now that it’s noon, and have the munchies? Don’t bother changing out of the hot pepper pajama pants, just go and indulge in your well-deserved fried twinkie! So you say it’s Sunday after church and you’re looking for a burger to satisfy the hunger of hours (or minutes) spent in devoted thought? Look no further, your dapper slacks and lime green bow tie will garner no disdainful second glance. While you’re there, do as I did. Find the most mouth watering, belly expanding plate on the menu and dive in. My particular tastes that fateful day immediately honed in on the Oklahoma dog, a massive hot dog wrapped in bacon, battered, and deep fried. Sweet potato fries would accompany the frank, if only to capture any calories I may have been too impolite and ignorant to include. When the mammoth overtook the table, I faintly recall wondering if my palate would be able to distinguish flavors of anything but beef product and…fried. It was a fleeting thought, as those happened to be just the two flavors I was seeking, but I needn’t have even let it cross my mind. Draped provocatively across a butter toasted poppyseed bun, the dog itself was not only sizable, but juicy and robust, salty, and clearly all beef. Bacon was there, I saw it myself, but there was too little to taste and no crisp on it to get the textural crunch. No matter, the batter had texture for days. Most definitely a coating comprised using suds, once fried it closely emulated a funnel cake minus sweetness; crispy on the outer edge, collapsing to a pillowy interior, with the beer lending a balanced bitterness and malty flavor. Garnished with red and green onions and old-school yellow mustard, the beast covers all essential hot dog profiles. And as for that order of sweet potato fries? Well how, may I ask, can one go wrong frying up the vibrant Oompah Loompah tinted orange starch in the first place? They were tasty, not quite crispy but not soggy, with just enough coarse salt to offset their inherent sweetness. Nothing mind blowing, just solid execution of a sweet potato fry.The wait staff was friendly, though I didn’t need much more than water (and a nap, after). There were two local musicians who alternated songs during my visit, which added to the homey atmosphere. A pure hang out spot with killer comfort food, The Brick is a go-to for a relaxing and entertaining meal. Kick your feet up, indulge a little, let your hair down. This is The Brick after all; you’re not here to put on a show, you’re here to enjoy it.
