Burnt ends or Burnt fat? We should try them again….. My family loved burnt ends when we lived in Kansas City — especially at Snead’s just west of Belton, MO. We discovered recently that burnt end brisket was on the menu at Lutz’s. We ordered two pounds and brought it home expecting a wonderful supper. The side of BBQ beans was very good — the potato salad was average. BUT, the burnt ends were poor — because close to half of the ends were fat – not meat. We think we’ll go back in a month or so to see if it happens again, but we were very disappointed this first time. As a restaurant Lutz should have noticed the high percentage of fat on their burnt ends and trimmed some of it off before serving it. This may be too harsh as we see other Lutz’s reviews mentioning burnt ends and saying the reviewer liked/loved them. Yes, we should try them again and perhaps mention our disappointment of our first try to the Lutz people.09 Jun, 2014Burnt ends or Burnt fat?. Sorry we came an hour before you closed. My wife and I ate at this resturant once a week. I walked into the resturant tonight and the girl who worked there was definitely not happy to see customers coming in an hour before they closed. She saw us walking into the door and immediately turned around and rose her arms up high. I walked in and I said isit ok that we came and she completely ignored my question. I then was fed up and said thank you and left. We spent over $30 on this resturant every week and this is how we get treated? I always ordered the prime rib 1/2 pound and my wife got the 1/4 prime basket. Three times we got home and both sandwiches were identical. Why was I charged extra for something I did not get? I suggest that the owner needs to train his employees on how important customer satisfaction is.

Get the pork Cuban sandwich. The pork cuban sandwich with some of their home made chips (i like the parmesan flavoring) cannot be beaten in Jeff City.

Love it. Zesty house chips and sliced pork loin are awesome. The Cuban sandwich is also excellent. The staff is friendly and prompt.

Loved it. Great rib dinner, very good sides and reasonable prices. Try the homemade chips

Slackers loves Lutz’s. I get the fish basket with salt and vinegar chips. If you like fish (or even just think it’s OK), you should try it. Here’s the kicker–they make their own tartar sauce. This isn’t the mayonnaise-consistency nasty stuff you get from the store, they make it in-house, and it is great. It has a good onion-y taste, but it isn’t overpowering. I thought I hated tartar sauce until I had their stuff. Their barbeque is also great, but that almost goes without saying. Bandana’s will taste like ash in your mouth in comparison (I cite Barbeque Chicken Nachos from Bandana’s as evidence, which is a disgusting concept and even worse execution).

Keep Driving…. A while back the Q demon spoke my name so I went and checked out Lutz’s. What can I say, the axiom that the more awards a BBQ place has won the worse the food is certainly holds true for this place. It looks promising, a little joint in a gas station, no unnecessary frills to distract one. The staff was competent and quick and the food served quickly. Sadly the brisket was more appropriately called roast beef. You could have a better smoked meat experience eating a McDonald’s hamburger next to someone smoking a cigarette. I had taken my mother to lunch and for some reason she ordered a salad. Let me say that I believe if you order a salad at BBQ place you get what you deserve, but this particular salad was cruel and inhumane punishment for such a minor hubris. Maybe seventy cents worth of soggy mixed greens that looked suspiciously like the bagged salad one gets at the grocery store drowned in a sickly sweet poppy seed dressing, a tremendous rip off for nearly six dollars. I tried the three different kinds of sauce on the table in a failed effort to give the brisket some flavor. The Kansas City style must refer to the Kraft BBQ sauce you might buy on sale at a Kansas City grocery store, the hot and spicy was neither and the mustard sauce was so forgettable that now, an hour or so later, I have forgotten it. The only bright spot about Lutz’s is the home made potato chips. We got the salt and vinegar and they were surprisingly good. On the other hand, they were potato chips and barely worth the near four dollar price tag. On still another hand, all it takes to make a potato chip is a rotary slicer and a deep fryer so it’s really not much of an endorsement. Maybe the best thing I can say about the food at this place is that I now feel it pushing it’s way at great speed towards my colon and will soon be gone. I suggest that if you’re out that way and hungry for BBQ to keep driving until you get to Kansas City and go to L.C.’s or Bryant’s, or even Gates. Lutz’s is a total waste of time and money and should be ashamed of itself, very ashamed.
