A great diner style breakfast. Service was good even though they were packed.
Patrons be warned. My wife and I moved to Jeff city back in October, we enjoy eating out for breakfast usually on a Sunday morning. We set out looking for a new place to do just that shortly after moving here. We happened to drive by Mel’s and the parking lot was full. That generally means the food is good and the service is better. We thought up until today we had found our spot, we have gone there several times since October sometimes once a week others only a couple 3 times a month. This morning we ordered our breakfast and I wanted to try the pie, I like Tripp,e berry pie so I ordered the berry blast. After my meal our waitress brought out my pie and I tried it but it tasted different than what I was used to from other berry pies. I thought that maybe they had used rhubarb instead of strawberries, as I cut into the pie again a piece of the crust fell off and under the crust was nothing but mold, fuzzy hairy mold. It was all I could do to keep from getting sick right there. When we pointed it out our waitress she was so embarrassed and apologized, she removed the pie from our tab by instructions of the manager but e manager never came and spoke with us over the situation, I guess he didn’t care was maybe was just another situation he didn’t to deal with again. Mel’s had good food and good service but that pie had to be more than a week old or two for there to be that much mold on it I can’t but think how much more food is coming out of that kitchen that is several days old and nearly spoiled. I’m sorry Mel but I’m just not going to be able to trust that you would serve me good quality food from that kitchen. Unfortunately I won’t be able to return again.
Breakfast is okay but last time I went there was so much cigarette smoke that the food all tasted like smoke.

Great for breakfast! Comfy little place, frequented by retirees and fans of solid breakfast food at all ages.
Everything tastes the same…salty…bland.
This place is big on their broasted chicken, which i usually do not like. Only the late and lamented, and lamented with many tears, Swanson’s of Melvindale (Mich) made good broasted chicken.
