Sublime. The nicest possible servers. Innovative, approachable food that makes you swoon. Make sure to get the white bolognese or the meatball pasta. The figura pizza is a crazy and astonishing combination of flavor – salty, savory, sweet. Lots of pickled accents throughout the menu, and they’re carried off perfectly. Oh, and the bartender? Just tell him you want something new and you’ll be delighted.
Disappointed. We had heard such great things. The salads were good. But the clam pasta dish was like mac and cheese with clam straps added. The clams were tasty and tender. But as a fan of seafood pastas and especially linguini with clams, this one fell short. The Margarita pizza had wonderful flavor. But the charred crust did not go with a mushy center. No where near the quality we had eaten at the original Good Pie when it was on Olive near SLU.And the service was marginal at best. However to her credit, the waitress took the clams dish off the bill, which was not requested or anticipated.Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes..
The first time we ate at Randolfi’s, we were so impressed with the ability of the chefs to turn spaghetti and meatball into high art for the palate we decided to give them a go for our anniversary, and they knocked it out of the park. We know where we’ll be going for our next anniversary and, since they’re so reasonable, for quite a few meals in between. We were fortunate to be able to get Lily each time, as she brings both a depth of knowledge of and a passion for food that elevates the experience. Knowing when to stay and chat knowledgeably about the food, the bread, the drinks, the music and when to silently and swiftly serve and not interrupt the flow of our conversation, she IS what every restaurant worker should strive for. When you go, do ask for her. Just not on the nights we go 😉 Our first time we kept it fairly simple with spaghetti and meatballs. If you can call the homemade spaghetti that twists and curls and so perfectly cooked you realize this is what pasta is supposed to be simple. Oh, and that meatball? Softball sized. And falls apart on the tongue. All in a sauce that is so good you are thrilled the best bread in the universe is there so you can mop it up. So, yeah, simple. Our second meal we went with the amazing 6 course tasting menu (DO get it, you’ll be delighted!) and as we gushed to the chef afterwards when he came to chat, it was all wonderful. When he asked us what we didn’t like, we could not think of a thing. The tastes in each dish surprise, delight and thank heavens for that divine bread to sop up every drop of sauce. We were lucky that they sent out a little surprise bitters drink to clear the palate, such a delight, and not one but two divine extras. There’s no doubt that Randolfi’s is putting out spectacular food right now. They care deeply about how it is sourced. And served. If you love crazy good food, you’ve found your place.
