Tried for the first time last, really saddened that I was rather disappointed. The staff are very pleasant, the shop is clean and quaint. But the sandwiches we got were very bland. The meat is extremely lean and tender, but could have benefited from a pinch of salt. They were dipped, but were still somehow dry. The only evidence was the oily sheen on the exterior of the roll. I really wanted to like this place, but just can’t.
This place is great! The fat tony is big enough for two people to split, the corn dog with its light and delicious batter is incredible, and the hand cut potato chips/fries are super fresh and crunchy. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a great local spot that’s open late.
Not your average shop.. I had the Don, dipped, with sweet peppers. It was basically a wet beef sandwich a classic Chicago staple. The beef broth was great, the breads outer skin held up well while the soft center soaked up the messy goodness. If I had one complaint it would be the place could use a wipe down. My table was not the cleanest I’d ever sat at. My friend ordered the caprese salad and he really liked it. Fresh mozzarella looked great.
Nice salad. I went there in early February – I live close by – and had the spinach three berry salad with raspberry vinaigrette, and an orange Italian ice. Both were HUGE -in fact, I had to finish the salad much later that night- and very tasty; I’ve tried to duplicate it at home several times. I’m going to get the strawberry ice next time; it’s been so cold here i haven’t wanted anything frozen. I’m going to try that portabello mushroom sandwich, too. Love mushrooms, but my brother and sister hated them, so I grew up in extreme mushroom deprivation. PS Just read that my salad was the chef’s final exam project at cooking school! I never ate a thesis before…. ; )
